The Academy, a quartet with roots in Miami, beat out 26 other young quartets from around the world to capture the college championship Tuesday evening in Las Vegas.

Singing old standards "Beautiful Dreamer" and "The Frim Fram Sauce" the quartet posted A-level scores comparable to those in the open division contest, which opened Wednesday morning.

The Academy quartet consists of

• Andrew Lujan, tenor, Florida International University

• Peter Cunningham, lead, University of Texas-San Antonio

• Kevin Mendez, bari, Miami Dade College

• Michael Skutt, bass, Texas A&M

The top five college quartets were, in order:

1. The Academy, Florida International University,University of Texas-San Antonio, Miami Dade College, Texas A&M

2. The Sunny Boys, Miami Dade College, Florida International University, Michigan State University

3. The Con Men, Capital University

4. Flightline, Fullerton College, Santa Ana College,

5. Backstab, SNOBS
