Las Vegas room block expires May 31; Lock in prices and perks by reserving now
One of the best lodging values on the Vegas strip can still be had, but only if you reserve before May 31.
The official housing block for the 2014 International Convention is at the MGM Grand Hotel. Guests of the Barbershop Harmony Society get preferential pricing on rooms at the MGM Grand, but that pricing expires after May 31.
Availability is limited, but some rooms can still be had for as little as $129/night, and a few at $141/night. These rates will be locked for your entire stay only if you book by May 31.
After May 31, you may still book in our block, but the rate could change dramatically, especially for the holiday weekend. Book now to lock in the best rate.
Booking in our room block before May 31 also earns you this great package of perks:

After 27 years, maybe you're ready for a few more Polecats?
Inaugurated in 1971, the Barberpole Cat program is an enduring testament to Barbershoppers' desire to strike up a song with friends they've known less than sixty seconds. Our worldwide shared repertoire of twelve songs was voted on by Society members in 1987, and most diehards have learned and sung them all. But, truth be known, there's a stealthy, second set of Polecats, isn't there? The next dozen or so songs that most of us sort of know, and fall back on when we've sung "My Wild irish Rose" one time too many at afterglow. These too are mostly easy, mostly familiar, commonly Boston Common -- we treat them interchangeably. Click the link to pick your favorites. |

Barbershop choruses forming in Argentina and Hong Kong

David Calland of Harmony Foundation is a friendly guy, and he gets friend requests from many fans of his quartet (The Allies) and chorus (The Alliance.) He recently shared this exchange from South America.
My name is Enrique Borlenghi. I live in Argentina, and I am the founder and director of the first barbershop chorus in Latin America, Captuo 1 (see their website or Facebook pages.) Im trying to get in touch with Barbershoppers all around the globe, for I feel rather lonely down here and I think barbershop music is all about the joy of sharing with others. ... I have many projects, some of them include bringing a director to do some workshops, a quartet, to hear "the real thing", and a chorus, to show people what barbershop can be. Those are long term projects, I still have to work a lot here with my chorus.
I also have a couple of dreams, one of them is to be able to make it to HU some day, and the other is to take my chorus over there on a trip and sing our guts out! I am confident, I work every day in order to improve, and I believe that someday Ill be able to do it. Spread the word: Argentine barbershop is here to stay!
Find Enrique on Facebook and share some barbershop joy.
Meanwhile, two hemispheres away...

We're pleased to report that Hong Kong has a new barbershop chorus a-borning. Vocal Stream is directed by past college champ Eric Monson (Water Street Junction, 1992.) Visit their Facebook page to see videos of early days, and say "you knew them when."

"THOSE ICY FINGERS" SURE FEEL GOOD IN SUMMERTIME
"It's Witchcraft"
Dave Briner is a master arranger. From Platinum's "Just in Time" to "We Need a Little Christmas," Dave's had dozens of hits in the BHS catalog. Look to this one to become a standard or a polecat-lite in your chapter.
"Witchcraft", a new release, has it all. Gentle range? Check. Witty lines? Check. Shameless baritone tiddly? You bet. Why are you still reading this? Go order this:

DEPT. OF GAGS & MEMES
Adam Scott's Ten Commandments of Tag Singing
With a busy summer ahead of barbershop cookouts, barbershop camps, barbershop conventions, and barbershop hanging out in the backyard, it seemed timely to refresh ourselves on some rules of etiquette.
- Thou shalt not tag jack (also known as altering the words or notes of existing tags)
- Thou shalt not 5th wheel
- Thou shalt not encroach upon the space of others
- Thou shalt not obnoxiously add 9ths and 7ths to existing tags including and especially the Westminster flat 7
- Thou shalt not intrude upon, or ask to sing with an obviously established tagging quartet unless invited by someone in said quartet
- Thou shalt not be too exclusive but read the social signals that anyone should be able to read and INVITE others to join or sub in to the next tag. Thou shalt encourage other's enjoyment of tag singing too.
- Cousin Shane Scott's tenor rule of "if thou full-voiceth the penultimate 2, thou must also proceed to full-voiceth the 3".
- Thou shalt apply proper balance to the chords (no blastissimo or molto screamissimo thirds, etc)
- Thou shalt know all four parts to a tag before proceeding to teach the tag.
- Thou shalt not add the second half of the new "Behind" tag ("The world")to any other tag except said "Behind" tag.

Coming this month in The Harmonizer
A few months back, as our esteemed colleague built up a head of steam and started pacing back and forth during a staff meeting, we realized something: Marty Monson is so good when he's speaking to a group, we no longer need him to write a column in the magazine. From now on, we just need to clip on a mic and let the man do his thing.
Hence this issue's debut of the CEO column via YouTube. Marty addresses his team - and the entire Society, really - about a small chapter that is getting it right.
Also this month:
- Powers of 3: How 3 choruses from 3 districts staged 3 shows in 3 cities in 3 days
- BHS Annual report - stats and reports on how we're reaching our goals
- Be a better music reader
- A Roger Payne tag

PLUS: You say your chapter is fun? The Harmonizer wants to know what puts a smile on your face and keeps you coming back. Tell us in 300 words or less by June 22.

Last week's video: fun. Its blooper reel? Funnier.
Everyone loved last week's Harmony University tour video. We should probably tell you that those lovingly compiled views of Nashville came at great personal sacrifice: sunburn, windburn, a few surprised motorists, and a melancholic wave at the Pedal Bar passing into the distance, its wares unsampled by our film crew (or so they promise us.)

For grins, watch the blooper reel and imagine your daughter singing in a YWIH Chorus with our Becca's quartet Last Minute as section leaders. Wouldn't you wish your daughter were her best friend?)

Send an educator to Harmony University this summer
Would your chapter sponsor an educator? Maybe after reading this.
"I cannot thank the Barbershop Harmony Society enough for giving me a scholarship to Harmony University. I have spent most of my life as a musician and a performer and have been fortunate to have many excellent performing, leadership and classes in music. Harmony University enabled me to see a musical community in action engaged in their art positive and excited for the future. I am more excited to be a part of this group than ever, and eager to take that message to my community even more than I was before. I have been energized more than I thought I could be and look forward to attending next year." -- Michael Callahan,
Music Director/Organist, Bethel Wesley UMC, Moline, IL
