Ragtime Gals kick off Fallon's run on Tonight Show
The Ragtime Gals: Ignition (Remix)
The Ragtime Gals: Ignition (Remix)

Props to Jimmy Fallon for heading straight to comedy gold on his second night as host of NBC's Tonight Show, with a stirring cover of R. Kelly's "Ignition."

It's not strictly barbershop, not safe for work, and not likely to appear on a contest stage -- and it's great for public awareness.

Make use of it: next time someone says, "Barbershop? You mean like Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake, or that R. Kelly number? That was funny!" say, "Yes--barbershop! Great fun to sing!" Then sing with him. Don't defend, don't accuse--sing.

Retention starts the first year-- HQ grabs the initiative
What's the most frustrating part of membership management? Retention! It's great to sign up new members, and heartbreaking to see them drop away after their first year.

Seldom do new members drop out because barbershop stopped feeling great to sing.

Sometimes it's because a recruit bought a pig in a poke--the chapter life that seemed so bright on guest night turned out to be drudgery week in and week out. (Shame on the chapter leadership.)

Sometimes it's because job changes and family pressures squeezed out the time. (Shame on life.)

Sometimes it's because no one asked him to renew. (Shame on everyone.)

The Customer Service Center at HQ takes membership retention seriously. We want to boost renewals for first year members from 34% on-time/59% in first year to over 50% on- time and 70% overall.

To that end, the entire Society staff is taking part in a phone-a-thon this week, in which we are calling a group of new members with pending dues renewals, to make them aware that their invoices are in the mail (or email,) and asking them to continue membership in the Society.

We've gotten quite an earful. Some have been surprised and delighted that someone took the time to call. Some have had the opposite reaction: "How can you afford to spend time on this?" Some members have had a great experience and renewed on the spot. Some are disillusioned, but are considering moving to a different chapter and continuing.

It's worth trying nationally. It's definitely worth trying in your own chapter.

PR/Marketing For Your Chapter

Tuesday, February 25, noon

Brian Lynch

This highly interactive seminar will focus on ways chapters can turn the great things they are doing into greater public awareness. We'll start with a discussion of the difference between "free ads" and "stories," then move to fundamentals such as the PR basic tool kit every chapter needs. From there, we open the discussion to the specific interests of the participants: how we can take any barbershop activity and tell a story that's fun, compelling and relevant.

Visions of Excellence - Book Review

March 18, noon

Joe Cerutti

Many think the book is geared towards chorus directors, and it is for directors of all levels, but it is also a great resource for all chorus leadership, chorus singers and barbershop fans of all ages.  We'll talk a bit about the origin of the book and its predecessor in the choral music genre, "In Quest of Answers" by Carole Glenn. We will reference the ACDA review recently published in the Choral Journal and dissect the variety of the questions asked and the directors interviewed. We'll also leave time for a short Q&A. It is not necessary to have read the book, and the hour session might actually serve as a great introduction to the book for those who love the culture and history of the barbershop chorus.

Top quartets make for best outreach
Imagine having the Miami Heat drop by to coach your high school basketbal

Imagine having the Miami Heat drop by to coach your high school basketball team. Feels like this.

A few weeks ago, we suggested that getting a great quartet made for a great Youth Harmony Workshop. Carol Stephenson of the University of LaVerne agrees; a January workshop featuring Ringmasters was a hit.

Coming off the successes of their recent tour with concerts and youth clinics in Idaho, Utah, California, and Minnesota, Ringmasters is planning two more North American tours, one beginning June 13 leading up to the Las Vegas Convention, and another starting October 18. There are still a few openings in each tour for concerts and/or clinics. If interested, please contact their business manager, George Davidson, for information and details at ringmastersmanager@gmail.com.

American Boychoir records barbershop!

We love being known by the company we keep. The American Boychoir is a professional, touring youth chorus, directed by the widely-regarded Fernando Malvar-Ruiz, who loves barbershop harmony.

The Choir's most recent recording, "I Hear America Singing," includes two quartet cuts, "Sweet and Lovely" and "I Love That Old Barbershop Style."  Preview the tracks at http://youtu.be/bP7gR5bap6I

SPECIAL EDITION: SHINY!
Brand-new charts, just released!

As part of our expanding music publications initiative, you'll be seeing more new sheet music more often in 2014, so watch this space.

This week, we're starting with good, solid, singable barbershop that you can quickly incorporate into your repertoire.

"All I Do I Dream of You," masterfully arranged by David Wallace, uses an easy going swing and Big Band feel to deliver on this tune from "Singin' in the Rain." Accessible range and fun syncopations make this song, recently revived by Michael Bubl, a sure hit!  (Speaking of that classic flick, braver singers might also consider the "Singin' in the Rain Medley" by Mark Hale.)

"One Song at a Time," written and arranged by Joe Liles for the Far Western District's theme, is a short piece sure to get your foot a-tappin' to the beat. (If you love Joe's stuff (and who doesn't?) try "The Moment I Saw Your Eyes" for another catchy Liles original.)

Belmont University, new home of Harmony University, is located in what some would call a "hip" part of town. Along with Belmont, nearby universities Vanderbilt and David Lipscomb, help create a young, fresh, and unique atmosphere that has helped attract many younger people to this area. Shopsparks and interesting local events keep the area thriving.

But let's be honest, we're here to talk about something else...

... Something much more important - FOOD!

You've all probably wondered - "Am I going to be stuck with the same food everyday and not be able to get off of campus at all?" First of all, let's set the record straight, Belmont has some rockin' food. Seriously, it's fresh and delicious and you won't be disappointed.

However, if you find yourself needing some fresh Nashville area, Belmont is surrounded by "Top Rated" and "Best of Nashville" food options from Breweries to Barbeque to Nashville's famous "Hot Chicken" that are walking distance from campus.

Places like PM, Kalamatas, and Bongo Java are across the street. Literally. Other great places to experience the "Nashville scene" are only 7 minute walk away.

HARMONY U EXPANDS OFFERINGS
Bring on the Brigade at Harmony U!

How could we possibly pack MORE fun into Harmony University? By offering more quartetting!

You have asked for more singing at HU, and here is your chance! Join HUXQB(Harmony University eXtreme Quartetting Brigade) and sing eight gold medal arrangements with unlimited mixing and matching quartets.

HUXQB will be offered during the elective Session 4 classes (Monday-Wednesday evening), and therefore will avoid conflicting with core classes during the day. ANY male singer can participate!

Applications will be available soon along with HU registration materials. When you register for HUXQB (small additional fee will apply), you will receive an ADDITIONAL packet of music along with learning tracks so you can be sufficiently prepared to sing every song on site. Don't delay - slots are limited, and balance is critical. Who wants to stand around waiting for a tenor? :-)

You've been hearing about Brigades but never had the chance to participate?

You've been frustrated that there are only so many barbershop events you can fit in?

You've always had Harmony University on your must-do list?

Well, now you can do both! Do it!
