STOWAWAY AT MIDWINTER!
Sneak aboard the Queen Mary tonight LIVE on YouTube

We thought you might enjoy an inside look at the Opening Night Party of the Queen Mary, so we're going to try a super-experimental live YouTube event Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 7:00pm Pacific.

The Opening Night Party could be the greatest single night of barbershopping ever presented: international medalist quartets and seniors champs quartets  performing simultaneously in small salons of less than 100 people; tag-singing everywhere; and pop-up performances by a few favorites

Our live YouTube experience could very be cool, or a blurry racket. We'll be pulling video live from cell phones, not from fixed cameras on stable connections, so there are no promises here. It might work; it might not. We wanted to push the boundaries of how we share our events with you.

No special client or software required. Just visit our YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/barbershopharmony38 .

Note: this is separate from the live, subscription webcasts of contests and shows. Quality of the YouTube live event does not reflect the quality of the performance webcasts.

GREAT MOMENTS IN BARBERSHOP: JOHN, SHARON & JUSTIN MILLER

Proud parents trace their son's journey

Retiring Society Board Member John Miller brought the crowd to its feet in an emotional keynote address today at the Barbershop Harmony Society's Midwinter Convention. A stirring video assembled and narrated by his wife, Sharon, was the centerpiece of a story of how barbershop harmony has been at the core of their family life, and has had a transformative effect on their son, Justin, who now directs the Westminster Chorus and the Masters of Harmony.

The full video will be available Friday at www.barbershopconvention.com/john-miller-delivers-keynote and on our YouTube Channel.

What YOU Really Need To Know

with Steve Scott

February 6 - 12:00pm (Central)

What is it? Singing is at once an extremely easy and incredibly difficult task. On what should you focus as you sing? Join voice teacher Steve Scott as he discusses the principles of resonance and breathing, the two building blocks of efficient singing. Also included will be a brief discussion on vocal health and a pre-homework assignment.

75th Anniversary Celebration continues

Barbershop today is a lot like barbershop in 1938, except the singers are younger, the music is hotter, and its reach is much broader. The things we love about barbershop -- the close harmony, the friendship, the "haven from daily cares" -- stretch all the way back to 1938, when O.C.Cash and Rupert Hall invited some friends in Tulsa for a little songfest.

Travel back to the earliest days of the Barbershop Harmony Society!

Our sisters in harmony at Sweet Adelines International took a few minutes to recognize our birthday during their convention last November. Watch the video, including a birthday song from Rising Stars champs GQ plus vocalist Neyla Pekarek of Grammy Award-nominated group The Lumineers.

Memo from the future:
Ultra-modern chart from Kirby Shaw

Music Publications Editor Adam Scott was pretty excited about next week's song of the week. In fact, folks at this week's convention in Long Beach will get a peek at a super-secret, ne'er before seen, fresh-off-the press, modern chart, a tasty little show piece from the pen of veteran composer/arranger Dr Kirby Shaw, with a learning track by the inimitable Tony De Rosa.  Full details in next week's issue.

YWIH CHORUS OFFERED

Have you seen the impact the Young Women In Harmony programs (YWIH) have had on women's barbershop around the country? Young women are getting more and more excited about singing barbershop by participating in 1-3 day camps and festivals.

For the first time ever, Harmony University is opening its doors to women aged 25 and under, to experience a full week's worth of barbershop education, fellowship, and most importantly, SINGING!

Our inaugural year will have Debbie Cleveland (Lead of Showtime (1994 SAI Champs) and lead of The Buzz (2005 SAI Champs) co-directing with Justin Miller (director of Westminster and Masters of Harmony Choruses).

For two hours / day, you will work with these fine directors alongside young women barbershop singers preparing a set to perform on the big Saturday Night show. During the other times of the day, you can take classes from the HU curriculum, which offers over 70 different classes including classes like Music Theory, Physics of Sound, History of Barbershop (class lists will be posted in April).

For more information on the YWIH Chorus, please contact Mike O'Neill at [email protected].
