Midwinter webcast? You bet!
Yes, you know what a great time we'll be having in Long Beach at the Midwinter Convention. And yes, you probably really do wish you could get there yourself, but the new job's a hassle and the kid's got the flu....

So be reassured that there is light in the depths of late January gloom, in the form of the Midwinter Convention webcast. Registrations are now open at www.midwinterwebcast.com! Prices start at just $20 per individual sessions, or only $39 for the full ride (all sessions)!

The first stream will be viewable on Friday, January 31, 10 a.m. Pacific time with the Youth Chorus Festival! Archives on-demand are included and will be available the following week.

For extra enjoyment, subscribers will have live access to all scheduled sessions and webcast archives starting sometime Monday, February 3, 2014.

YOU CAN DO THIS, TOO!

Gotham teaches you how to raise funds online

Those guys in the Hell's Kitchen, New York, Chapter have done it again. Not only are they raising funds effectively, but they're also teaching other chapters how to do the same.

"A few months ago, the chorus decided to put together an online fundraising campaign. It has been an incredible learning experience, and we were pleased to find that it was not only effective - but much easier to set up than we ever anticipated."

SONG OF THE WEEK
Sing the songs we're teaching the teachers

One facet of the Society's growing partnership with the American Choral Directors Association is presenting music-reading sessions at ACDA Division Conventions across the continent. Music educators get acquainted with a wide range of barbershop music suitable for their classrooms, which feeds excitement for the style, and incidentally, sells plenty of sheet music.

Want to collaborate with a local educator? Start by knowing the music that we've been inviting them to sing! We'll feature a few of these in coming issues, or you can check  http://barbershop.org/top-charts/acda-reading-session-music.html

This week:

Basin Street Blues features easy voice leading -- everything goes where it ought to go. A familiar classic for Barbershoppers.

Bring Him Home makes a nice connection for young singers to the music theater tradition. Soulful and stirring, it encourages easy, effortless singing technique.

HARMONY U EXPANDS OFFERINGS
Bring on the Brigade at Harmony U!

How could we possibly pack MORE fun into Harmony University? By offering more quartetting!

You have asked for more singing at HU, and here is your chance! Join HUXQB (Harmony University eXtreme Quartetting Brigade) and sing eight gold medal arrangements with unlimited mixing and matching quartets.

HUXQB will be offered during the elective Session 4 classes (Monday-Wednesday evening), and therefore will avoid conflicting with core classes during the day. ANY male singer can participate!

Applications will be available soon along with HU registration materials. When you register for HUXQB (small additional fee will apply), you will receive an ADDITIONAL packet of music along with learning tracks so you can be sufficiently prepared to sing every song on site. Don't delay - slots are limited, and balance is critical. Who wants to stand around waiting for a tenor? :-)

You've been hearing about Brigades but never had the chance to participate?

You've been frustrated that there are only so many barbershop events you can fit in?

You've always had Harmony University on your must-do list?

Well, now you can do both! Do it!

Learn more about the Brigades at  www.harmonybrigade.org or in this story from  The Harmonizer.

PEAK EXPERIENCES = LASTING IMPACTS

Astonish your Youth in Harmony students with events like this!

Every time a young singer tries barbershop for the first time, an angel gets his wings. If he gets to sing with Ringmasters, he'll never come down.

Carol Stephenson, a BHS Associate, is hosting a Youth Clinic next Wednesday, January 29, at the University of La Verne, about 50 miles from our convention site in Long Beach, California. Carol reports:

"The event includes an afternoon Youth Clinic from 1-4 pm, where the men of Ringmasters will be working with ULV's Barbershop singers: The A-Team women's quartet, Lordsburg Brothers men's quartet, and 3rd St. Sound men's chorus. An evening concert will begin at 7:30 pm with performances by the ULV groups, followed by a special appearance by 2012 SAI Region 21 Quartet Champions, Dolce. Dolce recently announced its retirement as a quartet, so this concert will be the last chance to hear them perform together. The concert will end with a fantastic and unforgettable performance by Ringmasters!!

"The Youth in Harmony program started at the University of La Verne in September of 2012, just after the men of Ringmasters won their gold medals, and is growing by leaps and bounds. All proceeds from the Ringmasters Clinic and Concert will go to support the Youth in Harmony Program at the University of La Verne."

MIDWINTER CONVENTION IN LOG BEACH | JANUARY 28-FEBRUARY 2

John Miller to deliver keynote address at Midwinter

The keynote speech offers inspiration for the Society, a status check and a vision of our potential. This year, we welcome John Miller, for a presentation on Thursday, January 30, with delayed webcast to be announced.

John's credits extend across his professional life as many roles as head of marketing at NBC Universal, to quartet singing (gold medals with Grandma's Boys (1979) and The New Tradition (1985)) to service on the Society Board. John and his wife Sharon (a Harmony Foundation Trustee) are also Presidents Council members; their $75,000 Challenge Grant during the 2012 convention inaugurated a series of successive challenges that are transforming our fund raising efforts.

The speech will be archived on our website at archived on our website for delayed viewing.
