HQ closed for U.S. Thanksgiving Holiday

Your entire team at Harmony Hall in Nashville has so much we are thankful for. We have the joy of living this amazing barbershop lifestyle, whether we ourselves are singers or not. We have members and customers who treat us as part of the worldwide barbershop family. We are regularly visited by travelling Barbershoppers, college choirs, a cappella groups of all stripes, who provide the best impromptu entertainment any workplace will ever offer .We get to do meaningful work that helps people help other people discover the joy of self-expression and harmony.

For all that, and so much more, we are grateful, and we thank you all. Together, we are making the music that's making a difference.

We also are grateful for our families, so we'll be taking a few days off to rest, refresh, and recharge with them.

Barbershop Harmony Society offices in Nashville will be close at 12 pm (CST) on Wednesday, November 27, and will reopen at 8 am on Monday, December 2.

Harmony Foundation International offices will be closed on Wednesday and will reopen on Monday.

Of course, you can continue to shop at www.harmonymarketplace.com, or manage your member records at ebiz.barbershop.org.

Travel safely and celebrate responsibly!
SONG OF THE WEEK
Bird is the Word

Culinary experts in the Music Publishing wing of Harmony Hall assure us these are perfectly acceptable substitutes for turkey. One is in good taste, one is in bad taste, but we hope you have something tasty for the stomach and the repertoire.

Any sheet of music headed by "composed by the Sherman Brothers, arranged by Walter Latzko" merits your attention. "Feed the Birds," from Disney's Mary Poppins, is a heart-tugger that might even make you reflect on your holiday gift-giving and support for local charities.

"Poisoning Pigeons in the Park," on the other hand, boasts virtually no socially redeeming value, except the gift of laughter. This one showcases the wit of songwriter/performer Tom Lehrer, famed for "The Chemical Elements", "The Vatican Rag", and the also-seasonal "Hunting Song."

SPEAKING OF BIRDS...

The 2014 Midwinter Convention is a terrific deal at any price, but you might as well save ten bucks by purchasing by December 1; rates pop up from $129 to $139, which brings you a pretty tremendous weekend of singing and performances:

  • Harmony Platoon mix-and-match pick-up quartet events

  • International Seniors Quartet Contest

  • Harmony University classes

  • International Youth Chorus Festival

  • Awesome shows featuring 2013 international quartet medalists Forefront, Main Street, A Mighty Wind, Musical Island Boys, and champion Masterpiece.

  • Surprises piled upon surprises.

Membership renewal now available on ebiz
Dues renewal notices have been generated for members with 12/31/2013 anniversaries, our biggest single renewal date. To ensure speedy processing through the November and December holidays, we ask you to send back your renewal as quickly as possible.

To assist in that, here's some good news: online membership renewal is once again operational in our ebiz.barbershop.org members portal. Login, enter a credit card number on our secure server, and you can be finished in as little as three minutes.

As always, our Member Service Center staff is ready to help you renew by phone, especially if you need to change chapters, move into Frank H. Thorne Chapter-At-Large, etc. Just call 800-876-SING during regular business hours. The Service Center can also assist in quartet renewals, which are not presently offered online.

Waiting by the mailbox for your catalog?

Harmonizer Nov Dec 2013

Fear not! We've got you covered. As more and more of our merchandise customers move to ordering online at harmonymarkeplace.com, the effectiveness of a full-size print catalog has diminished.

This holiday season, we will slash postage costs by moving to a smaller seasonal circular delivered with your Nov/Dec
Harmonizer. Look for it in your mailbox right after Thanksgiving. Of course, we will continue to offer a full line of barbershop apparel, recordings, sheet music and essential gear in person, online, and over the phone at 800-876-SING.

And when you get that magazine, go ahead and pretend that the cover looked more like this, the way it looked to Editor Lorin May as he prepared it for press. (Sometimes screens are brighter than ink.) This should save you the trouble of mentally inserting the words "Whole World" into the illustration.

Nominations open for Society Boardapply by December 10, 2013
