ONE MORE WAY TO HAVE FUN SINGING
World's Tag/Coda Singing Championship
We are so excited to be hosting this event. This is a fun competition, open to the whole world of a cappella harmony singers, professional and amateur. As there are literally 1000s of tags/coda in YouTube land, we have put together specific conditions of entry. As long as there is a minimum of 4 different singers and sung in at least 2 voice parts (or more) this competition gives everyone the chance to enter, whatever age and genre.

"Top Charts" page points young singers to hot music
As part of its ongoing outreach to music educators, the Society has recently been working to bring innovative and accessible music to their attention. This recent ad in Choral Journal highlights music that high school and college men will recognize and want to sing, and directs to a special page with audio clips and first-page previews.

JANUARY 28-FEBRUARY 2
Harmony University comes to Midwinter Convention
If you went to Midwinter Convention only for the great shows (five medalist quartets, seniors champs, et al.), or only for the contest (international seniors championships), or only for the International Youth Chorus Festival (20 choruses!), or only for the casual singing (Harmony Platoon,) then you'd STILL be MISSING the great barbershop fun to be had.
Harmony University at Midwinter brings you world-famous coaches, clinicians and educators for a grand buffet of seminars, included in your registration. Courses are still being added, but some pretty tasty morsels have been confirmed already:
- Barbershop 101: Newer members learn the in-and-outs of barbershop life, music and culture from Steve Tramack.
- Music reading sessions: Adam Scott runs you through a stack of fun new charts, a few chestnuts and other surprises.
- Gold Medal Hour with Masterpiece: How the great become the elite, with your 2013 International Quartet Champion
- Directors Roundtable: Leading lights engage in lively discussion of the elements of success. Featured panel includes Dr. Chris Peterson (Cal State-Fullerton); Lori Lyford (music educator, Scottsdale Chorus); Clay Hine (Atlanta Vocal Project); Tony De Rosa (Heralds of Harmony), Pam Paison, (Harborlites.)
- Good to Great: Mike O'Neill and Rick Spencer trace the arc of success in growing chapters.
- Vocal Techniques: Kim Hulbert teaches the best. Learn from the accomplished guru.

SONG OF THE WEEK
There's a song for that tag?
It's getting late, and poor cell reception in that perfectly resonant stairwell means you can't summon a hot new tag from barbershoptags.com, but you're still aching to sing a few more. Back to the classics: a loud one, "BE-HIND!" and a soft one, "foolish over you." Plenty of us are content with the tags, unaware that there's an actual song for these beauties. Check these out:
"When I Leave The World Behind" is a melancholy reflection on a life, with vivid imagery and strong interpretive possibilities. Your editor prefers The Four Renegades performance, although many great quartets have loved it.
"Each Time I Fall In Love," written and arranged by the legendary S.K. Grundy and made famous by The Sundowners, may be the very definition of the "oh, yeah" song, but you have to wait 50-some measures for the payoff. It's a fond tribute to the way your first love colors the rest of your life.

Waiting by the mailbox for your catalog?
Fear not! We've got you covered. As more and more of our merchandise customers move to ordering online at harmonymarkeplace.com, the effectiveness of a full-size print catalog has diminished.
This holiday season, we will slash postage costs by moving to a smaller seasonal circular delivered with your Nov/Dec Harmonizer. Look for it in your mailbox right after Thanksgiving. Of course, we will continue to offer a full line of barbershop apparel, recordings, sheet music and essential gear in person, online, and over the phone at 800-876-SING.

DISTANCE LEARNING STUDY UNDERWAY
How can we deliver Harmony U to your home?
Someday, you won't need other humans to sing barbershop. You and your clone replicas will manfully stride the stage, telepathically linked for synchronization, and perfect harmony will emerge.
Until then, you might want to study. That's not to say that technology won't play a role. In fact, Director of Harmony University Mike O'Neill and his team are already pursuing a number of different possibilities in distance learning via the web. In the early stages, we're interested in taking the pulse of members regarding their interest and expectations. Please take a moment to complete this brief, five-question survey to help us beginning shaping the barbershop education of the future.

ARMY MOBILIZED!
23K team announces projects
Last Friday, the general staff of the BHS Volunteer Army, led by Chief Volunteer Officer Pete Carentz, identified some of the first goals for the all-volunteer force. All the details will be forthcoming very soon, but here are a couple of hints:
- Every single first-year member will be contacted and asked how his first year is going. Instead of losing one third of all new members in the first year, we are pulling out all the stops to reduce that number dramatically.
- Strike teams are being formed, and action plans developed, to start many new chapters beginning this spring. In the first 10 years of the Society, our early members formed 500 chapters and gained 25,000 members in the process.
- Several other projects are on the drawing board. Right now, project leaders are being located and interviewed. Want to help improve CSLT training? So do we, and we are looking at how to do it.
If you want to join one of these exclusive teams and get some things accomplished for the future of our society, there is only one way to enlist in the army.
In the coming weeks, every single member will be receiving an invitation to go on line and fill out his own personal 23K questionnaire. Watch your email, because we are sending out 500 invitations every day. Every volunteer project member will come from the database being compiled from these questionnaires.
When you fill out your questionnaire, be careful to make note of every single talent and skill you have so we can have all of your skills in the database for future reference.
