Follow barbershop in the news on the Press Clippings page
Our social media feeds continue to grow in popularity, with more than 10,000 likes on our Facebook page and more than 3,600 followers on Twitter. Sometimes, though, you just can't beat browsing a simple blog . For you, we have the more traditionally-styled www.barbershophq.com.

Did you know that you can key in on specific topics in the Society's blog? For example, to see links to recent news media stories, click on the Press Clippings category in the right sidebar, or from the bookmarks at the top of a related post.

Recent clippings include a newspaper story about a joint effort with a local Rotary club, a pre-show radio appearance, and a stunning story about our chorus champs, Toronto Northern Lights.

SONG OF THE WEEK
Here's to the winners: charts by champs

Good coaches will always tell you, "Don't pick songs because champs sang them; pick them because YOU can sing them."

That noted, it's always nice to look at material created by some of our finest performers and arrangers. This week, we look at pieces by two men who are both quartet champs, both champion chorus directors, and both innovators in music and performance. No surprise, then, that their written works are polished gems.

You Make Me Feel So Young comes to us from Mark Hale (Michigan Jake, Masters of Harmony.) This difficult chart showcased the quartet's virtuosity, and is not for the weak-hearted.

When I Fall In Love is a classic, gentle ballad from Jay Giallombardo (Grandma's Boys, The New Tradition Chorus.) Listen with your mind's ear, and you'll probably hear the late Randy Chisholm singing it with Marquis.

"YOUR QUARTET SURE PRODUCES A LOT OF SPIT!"
Philharmonic Flavor - "Played By a Military Band"

A few weeks ago, we mentioned Roger Blackburn's "Barbershop in Brass" albums. A thoughtful reader kindly obliged us with this YouTube link.

Harmony Platoon
Just two more weeks are left to sign up for the Harmony Platoon in Long Beach! Tenors and baritones are needed. You'll have 24 hours of fun singing 5 great songs in as many quartet combinations as you can pack in. Any questions? Visit www.HarmonyPlatoon.org or email BillKaneVip@msn.com

WORK SMART-BOOK A MARQUEE PERFORMER NOW

Funding application for Youth in Harmony Events is November 1

The Barbershop Harmony Society is committed to providing funding for eligible Youth In Harmony events in 2014. In order to help you bring exciting opportunities to the young people in your community who love to sing, all BHS-sponsored youth workshops and camps are required to submit a grant application form

The submission deadline is November 1, 2013 and notifications of awards will be sent by December 15, 2013.

You know what would make that event really great? A great quartet! Why not jump start your event and your show with a great quartet?

  • Instant Classic went to Minneapolis in 2013 and sang for more than 500 students

  • Lemon Squeezy visited Florida area schools after midwinter 2013 and sang for more than 800 students

  • Prestige went to Minneapolis in 2012 and sang for more than 800 students

Work smart: book innovative events that capitalize on the star power, youth appeal and unique teaching skills of these tremendous ambassadors of barbershop harmony.

Consider these possibilities:

  • Create a Youth Harmony workshop or clinic in schools. Invite the quartet to be clinicians for a middle school or high school chorus, then bring that chorus on-stage to perform with the featured quartet on your show
  • Schedule a Harmony Explosion Camp or district HEP school appearance
  • Work with your divisional or state music education association now to book a showcase event along with BHS staff to demonstrate how a compelling music experience with a "rock-star barbershop quartet" can inspire young men to take up singing in ways they never would have expected.

Build audiences... build relationships... and provide unforgettable, magical moments for young singers in your area.

ARMY MOBILIZED!
23K/Phase II is underway - watch your email

Every day, up to 500 Society members will be receiving a personal email invitation to conduct their own "do-it-yourself" interview. Watch your email inbox for your own invitation. You can be assured it is legitimate if it comes from webmaster@bhsadmin.org, and it takes you to a web page at www.bhsadmin.org

The interview will be asking you about your satisfaction with your own total barbershop experience and your suggestions for any things that you would like to see "added, changed, improved or deleted." Additionally, you will be invited to send your own personal comments to CEO Marty Monson and Society President Shannon Elswick.

You will have the opportunity to enlist in the elite 23K volunteer army, helping with projects at every level. Some interesting projects are already taking shape including the formation of teams to help form new chapters. Several other projects will be announced soon. There is plenty of work for anyone who wants to help ensure the Barbershop Harmony Society remains the premier men's singing organization in the world.

Finally, you will be asked to look through an extensive list of individual skills and talents, checking the boxes that best describe your experience and willingness to help. This is a most important part of the interview. We are building a new database which will entirely replace the outdated and incomplete one we now have.

The entire process should take no more than 15 to 20 minutes. Please respond quickly when you get your own personal invitation. The volunteer army needs your help, and our Society deserves our support.

Sorry for the inconvenience
Scheduled maintenance and upgrades to data systems at headquarters have required taking some services at ebiz.barbershop.org offline for a few days. This is the first prolonged service interruption in more than six years, and we hope to resolve these issues quickly.

Presently, the following actions are offline.
  • Individual membership renewal
  • New quartet registration
  • Chapter/district roster download
Members may still phone Society headquarters at 800-876-SING for these activities while the full ebiz suite is brought back into service.
