FUN! BOATS! LIVING HISTORY!

Midwinter convention opens with launch party on Queen Mary

There are truly boatloads of new, "can't miss" things happening at the Midwinter convention, January 28-February 2, 2014. How about partying like it's 1932 on the Queen Mary? Yup -- an opening night party and show on Thursday, January 30, is included with your registration.

"But it's just a boat!" you say? Sure -- and the Barbershop Harmony Society is just a little singing club. Did you know she's bigger than the Titanic? (1,019.5 versus 882.9 feet overall.) And let's not forget total number of transatlantic crossings completed: 1,001 versus ZERO. (Okay, that might be a little cruel....)

Now sure, no one crosses the country just to have a drink on a ship. That's why we've whipped up the best events of the year:

  • The International Youth Chorus Festival may be the most exciting choral event you'll see all year. You will cry with joy to see how young singers are grabbing this art form and wringing more energy and excitement out of it than you've ever seen.

  • International Seniors Quartet Contest -- at the far other end of the age spectrum, you'll be equally delighted to see how singing barbershop keeps men young. Gives one hope, doesn't it?

  • Harmony University classes -- shape up your voice, try some new tags, and find more ways to enjoy making music.

And there will be shows -- oh yes, only the finest, featuring our medalist quartets.

And best of all, you'll find a casual, relaxed atmosphere with time for singing many, many tags.

SIT IN THE PIT--NOW OFFERED AT ALL FALL CONTESTS!

Place your bid for the Best Seat In The House

Many Barbershoppers think they can score contests as well as the judges. Now you can prove it--from the vantage point of the judging area itself!

This Fall, Harmony Foundation and the Contest & Judging program are teaming up to auction off a single seat at each & every contest session, including Division, District, Prelims and International. If you've ever wanted to test out your judging chops, you can bid on a seat at your District contest and be a "Judge for a Day." Bidding is open now for your upcoming District contest, at www.Harmonize.com/BestSeatInTheHouse

Minimum opening bids for each seat are $40, with minimum $5 incremental raises.

Funds received go to Harmony Foundation International to help defray the expenses for such efforts as the Collegiate Quartet Contest, Youth Chorus Festival, Youth Harmony Workshops, Harmony Explosion Camps, and Harmony University Scholarships for Music Educators.

What do I get for my winning bid?

  1. A great seat in the judging area for your selected contest session.

  2. A special guest judge name tag.

  3. A complete set of judging and scoring forms for your selected judging category.

  4. Following the convention, a chart showing how your scores compare to the official panel members in your selected judging category.

  5. An invitation to join the official panel at all meals and snacks at intermissions associated with your selected contest session.

  6. The chance to sit in and observe the evaluations sessions after the contest.

  7. A great opportunity to interface with the official panel members. Who knows? Someday you might apply for the judging program....

SONG OF THE WEEK
Get your groovy on

Barbershop draws on many different sources for inspiration. Influenced by our most recent Honorary Members, The Nylons, come our featured arrangements this week.

Good Old A Cappella  If your foot won't tap while this song's a-going, consult your audiologist -- your hearing's gone. A David Wright chart -- 'nuff said.

Happy Together  This Turtles song is a groovy classic arranged by Liz Garnett. "The minor to major to minor to major is awesome," says one admiring music publishing executive of discerning taste.

Carol of the Bells is a tune you can't escape throughout December. Your group can learn this one quickly, and it's short -- your hot chocolate will still be hot by the time you've finished singing it.
