SING THROUGH THE DOG DAYS

With many summer gatherings already past, some of us are experiencing tag withdrawal.  Symptoms include:

  • phantom humming of baritone parts
  • involuntary pitchpipe checking on the belt loop
  • tendency of  pointing the "good ear" toward any music source, as if it to discern a possible tenor line.

You can fix this with a little tag therapy. Gather up 8 or 9 friends, throw some burgers and corn on the grill,  stoke the fire pit, and treat yourself to some tag therapy.

The tags page on the Society website is chock-fill of old favorites. Download the Classic Tags book and get crackin' some chords. While you're at it, check out the many video examples on our YouTube Channel. For extra giggles, you'll enjoy Adam Scott as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Tag Time - HALLOWEEN EDITION
Judging parameters reviewed, renewed, refreshed

The Contest & Judging (C&J) Community recently completed its "Category School".  At Category School (held every three years), all existing certified and candidate judges meet to certify as well as discuss issues of the day for their categories.

In the past, we've not done a good job of communicating changes that were decided or directions taken other than changing the Rules and Category Descriptions (and hoping you would read them!!!).  If C&J wishes to drive certain behaviors and skills, why would we wait until after you competed to tell you?

That changes this year with this effort.  Furthermore, we have created a blogsite for each category so you can read the high-level changes and then if you have questions, you can ask the Category Specialist for more details.  They won't share every detailed conversation but will certainly share any rationale for a change, course direction, etc, as well as provide more detail.  Feel free to ask away!

Explore barbershop history in back issues of The Harmonizer
harmonizer cover roots

Every so often, a reader will ask, "Why don't you write about ___ in the magazine?" Your dutiful editors will ponder it, and often find themselves thinking, "We've already published a story about this -- surely everyone in the Society must know it by now."

Surprisingly often, though, "just ran" stretches back many years.

For example, this gem of a story on the historical roots of barbershop harmony "just ran" in 2001. It's well worth re-reading -- or discovering for the first time.

Did you know that every issue of The Harmonizer is online? It is. Read on.

WORK SMART
Selecting Music For Your Quartet
Duane Henry published this nice piece on the Cardinal District website.

So, you have finally found four guys who sound pretty good together, you seem socially compatible and you have matching socks.  Looks like the making of a new quartet!  The next step ... what are we going to sing?

Contest Entry - Time to get your act together

As fall contest season approaches, it's good to start taking care of a few administrative  tasks now, to avoid any last-minute surprises.

Remember these important details:

  1. Your quartet must be an officially registered Society quartet.  If you haven't yet paid for the registration or renewal of your quartet, you'll need to do this before beginning the contest entry process.  Call 800-876-7464 if you require assistance in registering or renewing your quartet
  2. All four (competing) members of the quartet must be current Society members, and their memberships must be current - and all dues paid - on the actual day of the competition.  Login to eBiz to check dues status for your quartet.
  3. You will need a legal copy of each piece of music you are singing, showing the Product ID numbers of any music purchased from the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), and all copyright/publisher information for songs you did not purchase from the BHS.  Check  Is my arrrangement contestable?
  4. If you have not cleared your arrangements, please contact the Music Library PRONTO!

Not sure about this? ? Full details are on the website at  Contest Entry Made REALLY Easy.
