Da Capo to open for Manhattan Transfer
Da Capo, a top-ten finalist in Toronto, is slated to perform alongside the ten-time Grammy award winning The Manhattan Transfer this Saturday, July 20th at 8:00pm ET.
The Manhattan Transfer, a Vocal Group Hall of Fame inductee, has been entertaining audiences for more than forty years, releasing over twenty albums during that time.
The concert, held at the Ferguson Center for the Arts in Newport News, VA, is one that fans of vocal harmony should not miss. Folks along the I-95 corridor would be wise to make it to this show in southeastern Virginia. If you are able, come out and represent Barbershop Harmony this Saturday. It will be worth the drive!

Chapters exchange bulletins, ideas on BHS Group
The venerable chapter bulletin continues to serve as a crucial link binding chapters together. Whether it's a brief weekly meeting agenda, monthly craft and news piece, or all-hands email newsletter, the chapter bulletin keeps members informed of where to be, where they should have been, and where they hope to go.
 |
Cryptic marks such as these once served as proof of payment.
|
In those ancient days when the United States Post Office carried the bulk of communications, these bulletins were often printed (gasp!) on paper (gasp!) and mailed (ask your pop to see a "stamp") to members, district officers, and other friends and fans of the chapter. As these have moved online, a curious thing has happened; the promise of more people receiving more information seems to have dwindled. Home addresses are relatively stable, but email addresses are will o' the wisps, and with each change, a few more links are lost. While there, you can also sign in with a Google account to automatically receive these postings via email. The group is yet another adjunct to the many ways Barbershoppers share ideas, including the Harmonet, the Society Facebook page and group, Twitter feed, and headquarters blogs.

BE THE EARS
Needed: volunteers to make fewer than 25 calls
Over 40 percent of our chapters (328) have 25 members or less. Why not be the designated 23K Project for your chapter.
All you will have to do is call your fellow chapter members. Of course, you can always call guys in other chapters if you get the urge. The 23K project is an all-volunteer effort, so feel free to appoint yourself to be a fully certified member of this prestigious calling team---the elite of the elite. To get started, just forward your name, your preferred phone number and a good time to call to: mtjack@bresnan.net. You will be contacted the same day and interviewed as soon as you are available. Don't let your chapter down. They need you.

PRESS CLIPPING - LOOKING GOOD IN THE NEWS
Maclean's Magazine: "The new barbershop revival"

New chorus champ Toronto Northern Lights is featured in Maclean's magazine, along with other Ontario-area champs.
The simplicity of a cappella- singing without instrumental accompaniment-is in the midst of a revival, spurred on in part by reality shows that celebrate unadorned vocals. And the added attention has helped inject energy into an unlikely candidate: the traditional unaccompanied harmonies of barbershop.
"With shows like Glee and The Voice, the focus is that singing is cool," said Steve Armstrong, musical director of Toronto Northern Lights chorus. "Shows like the Sing Off, which is a cappella, has been great to develop interest in barbershop."
