Summer Reading, Writing, and Math Incentives
|
Staff and parents have worked hard during the school year to give your children the best learning opportunities possible. As summer approaches, please remember that the best gift parents can give children is to provide them with daily opportunities to read, write, and practice math. All students will need practice in these areas during the summer months in order to maintain the skill level they achieved by the end of the school year. Teachers in grades K-4 have prepared some suggestions for summer homework which will provide practice for basic skills (reading, writing, math computation, and problem solving) during the summer vacation.
Students whose parents sign off on reading and writing logs, practice math through Dreambox (kindergarten only) , IXL (current students have their IXL log in information), participate in a library program, or complete the Summer Bridge Activity booklet, will be awarded a trip to the treasure box when they present their summer work to the classroom teacher by August 26th.

The NEW Lenski Learning Garden!!
|
The girls of 5th grade Girl Scout Troop #850 have been busy! Despite uncooperative weather last month the sod is finally cleared, the raised garden beds are built, the sheet-mulching is in place, the mulch is spread, the soil is shoveled, the starter plants and seeds are planted, watering and maintenance plans are in works... and the NEW Lenski Learning Garden is officially in place along the west side of the school building!
Please email Jennifer Casani if you would like to be a part of the excitement and momentum. A Garden Committee is formed, and planning is in process to maintain the garden over the summer and years beyond. Sign-ups for summer workdays and learning opportunities will be emailed to Committee members. Donations of new or gently used tools and supplies are welcomed on an ongoing basis.
This valuable school-wide teaching and experiential learning tool would not be possible without the support of Dr. DeSpain and her team of dedicated administrators, Mrs. Vogel and Mrs. Simpson. Be sure you and your kids give them a big thanks and shout-out! Thanks to their leadership and recognition of the girls' vision and project plan, Lenski now has the ability to tie the garden into existing curriculum subjects (and even the cafeteria)! Lenski students will have one more way to excel as they learn how gardening brings science, chemistry, biology, math, social studies, history and English to life, and discover how they all fit together.
On behalf of the girls of 5th grade Girl Scout Troop #850, we thank you for your support.
With gratitude -
Erica Fukuhara, Troop Leader and 2016 Garden Committee Co-chair
Jennifer Casani, Project Advisor/Mentor and 2016 Garden Committee Co-chair
Charlotte Brady, Garden Coordinator
About the Lenski Learning Garden (Initiated by 5th Grade Girl Scout Troop #850, to earn their Bronze Award):
A group of 5th graders are Girl Scouts that want to make a difference at school and leave a legacy. They achieved the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can earn - the Bronze Award. (This is comparable to the Eagle Project/Award for Boy Scouts, at this age level.) To earn this award, they created a project based on their observations of a local issue. The girls chose to create a school veggie/food garden: the Lenski Learning Garden. They took huge strides to set up an initial framework for an important teaching asset for the Lenski community... that can be built upon in the future by others, and ideally sustained by the framework they create.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Lenski parents, staff and 5th graders, you made it possible for our students to enjoy two successful field days! I appreciate how many parents volunteered to help run events, clean up and set up for Field Days, and how many people offered to help when we needed last minute substitutes. I wanted to give a special thank you to our Field Day Coordinator, Rene Meale. She volunteered many hours behind the scenes securing volunteers, shopping for supplies, sending emails, making name tags and organizing equipment. Additionally she helped to set up for field days over the weekend and the days before the events. This year I learned Rene's superpower; she has connections! When I showed Rene the chart detailing where we lacked enough volunteers to run field days, she was texting while I talked and had the positions covered in a matter of minutes. What an asset she is to our field day team! Dr. DeSpain gave us incredible support and each teacher chaperoned their classes. Our special's teachers and support staff also took shifts running field day events. Davis Williams used his physical education expertise to run events and help with field day setup. Jan Jack and Kathy Fennelly came early to help set up, and ran events. Jean Vogel and Peggy Simpson assisted in countless administrative ways. Also, thank you to Padja, who supplied us with tables and chairs and moved equipment. Thank you to Carol VanDeWeghe and the cafeteria staff who graciously shared the freezers and sinks with our water and Popsicle crews. Finally, thank you to Superstars' staff for their support, and the 5th teachers who allowed the awesome 5th graders to came out to run events for the 1st & 2nd grade field day. Please know I appreciate the assistance each one of you provided. What a wonderful team effort! Thank you again; it would not happen without you! Coach Wilson |
