Meet Melissa Mooney, Representative for the LPS Joint PTO Scholarship Committee

My name is Melissa Mooney and I am the Lois Lenski representative for the LPS Joint PTO Scholarship committee. Each year in May this committee awards scholarship grants to support teacher's continued professional growth. When I learned of this opportunity to volunteer, I couldn't resist, as I have a strong belief that great educators make for successful students. In the 5 years our son has been at Lenski, we have repeatedly seen what a strong and committed staff and community the school has to offer.

My husband and I have lived in Colorado for about 20 years and we have two children. Our oldest has recently graduated from CU and our youngest, Ian, is currently a 4th grader at Lenski. When I first volunteered in my son's kindergarten class, it was to meet the teachers, parents and learn about the culture of Lois Lenski, since we did open enrollment. Very quickly my husband and I realized what a great place for our son to experience his first years of school. We decided to move into district to make Lenski our home and have never looked back!

My husband is an aerospace engineer and I enjoy working at a downtown hospital as a nurse practitioner, as well as, teach at Regis University in their nursing program. Education has always been a passion of mine, so having the chance to be part of a community committed in excellence has been an extraordinary journey for our family.

Love from Lenski and Children's Book Drive
February 10 and February 11 from 11:00 am - 1:30 pm
Love from Lenski
Every year, during the Valentine's Day holiday, our thoughtful Lenski students take time during their lunch hour to write out messages of encouragement to individuals in the community who could use some kind wishes and "Cheer".  This year, these special Valentines will be delivered to Someren Glen (formerly the Johnson Center) located directly across Arapahoe Road from our school.  The facility offers care to seniors ranging from Assisted Living to Hospice Care.  There are over 500 members of the Someren Glen community and we would like to ensure that all of these special individuals receive a Valentine from a Lenski student.

How can you help?  Encourage your student to participate in the lunch hour activity, send in donated stickers to decorate the Valentines (ideally not individually paper backed ones!) or click here to volunteer to help!  We will be decorating the Valentine's on Tuesday February 10th and Wednesday February 11th from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the Lenski cafeteria.

This year, in conjunction with warming the hearts in our community, we will also be hosting a gently-used children's book drive.   Please have your students bring in gently used children's books between February 1st and February 11th and place them in the boxes located in Lenski's front lobby. The donated items will be taken to the Village North Preschool in downtown Littleton.  It is part of Littleton Public Schools and serves children and families in our district.   The Village North Preschool is also in need of gently used small stuffed animals (to be used as reading buddies) and school supplies.
