Student and Community Involvement
Town Hall meetings engage students in democratic process Monday, October 26 By Kate Sine Some students today may be confused with the structure of government. Maybe, they don't understand which branch controls what or who can assist in a certain situation. For example, instead of calling the county commissioner or state senator for a trash or recycling issue, you would instead call a city-level representative.
The Town Hall Meeting on October 28 in the Lane University Center Atkinson Room at 6 p.m. will be focused on how each branch of the local government interacts with students and residents. The event is free and open to the public. It serves to educate the students on how they can make a change with the democratic process as a tool. This is just one of Patrick O'Brien's, Director of Civic Engagement's, expectations of the town meetings. O'Brien has been lending a helping hand in organizing these events. He has invited representatives from county, city and University officials to this assembly to teach students what each representative does at their corresponding level. The J. Glenn Beall Institute for Public Affairs and the Office of Civic Engagement are hosting the Town Hall meetings while the Student Government Organization sponsor and supports. Sponsor-A-Family Thanksgiving Baskets
Once again the time has come to give to those who are not as fortunate as most of us. Through our Annual Sponsor-a-Family Program, departments and organizations on campus can help make a difference in a family's life in Western Maryland by providing a food basket to a needy family. Over the past 10 years the Sponsor-a-Family Program has provided Thanksgiving baskets for over 350 families in Western Maryland.
We are hopeful that we can continue the success we've had over these past years. If your office or organization is interested in sponsoring a family for the Thanksgiving Holiday, please email Pat Travers in the Office of Civic Engagement or call at 301.687.7598 for further details. Last year we helped over 80 families have a wonderful meal. All baskets will be delivered on the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
