CATHERINE RUSSELL
Friday, November 22 * 8:00 PM

Lane University Center,

Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall

Sultry jazz and blues singer Catherine Russell offers an intimate performance that brings to mind the passionate intensity of beloved American legends like Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington and Bessie Smith. Her sumptuous vocals impart radiant power to her interpretations of classic 20th-century jazz and blue's songs. Russel's abundance of talent is not surprising when one considers that her father, the late Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong's longtime musical director and that her mother, Carline Ray, was a Julliard-educated bassist who performed with World War II's iconic all-female orchestra, the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. Russel whohas recorded and performed with such legends as Catherine Russell

David Bowie, Paul Simon and Steely Dan, has also

been a regular hit at major festivals like Chicago

Blues, Montreal Jazz, Bern International Jazz and

Tanglewood Jazz. She has performed for sold-out

audiences at the Kennedy Center, Yoshi's in

San Francisco and the Skirball Cultural Center in

Los Angeles, and has appeared on nationally

syndicated NPR shows including Mountain Stage,

JazzSet, Weekend Edition and World Café.
