Cultural Events Series
CATHERINE RUSSELL
 Friday, November 22 * 8:00 PM
Lane University Center, Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall
Sultry jazz and blues singer Catherine Russell offers an intimate performance that brings to mind the passionate intensity of beloved American legends like Billie Holliday, Dinah Washington and Bessie Smith. Her sumptuous vocals impart radiant power to her interpretations of classic 20th-century jazz and blue's songs. Russel's abundance of talent is not surprising when one considers that her father, the late Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong's longtime musical director and that her mother, Carline Ray, was a Julliard-educated bassist who performed with World War II's iconic all-female orchestra, the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. Russel whohas recorded and performed with such legends as
David Bowie, Paul Simon and Steely Dan, has also
been a regular hit at major festivals like Chicago
Blues, Montreal Jazz, Bern International Jazz and
Tanglewood Jazz. She has performed for sold-out
audiences at the Kennedy Center, Yoshi's in
San Francisco and the Skirball Cultural Center in
Los Angeles, and has appeared on nationally
syndicated NPR shows including Mountain Stage,
JazzSet, Weekend Edition and World Café.
Purchase tickets at the Lane University Center Box Office Monday-Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm. $5/FSU Students w/ID * $20/Adults * $17/Youth Under 17 and FSU staff. For more information, contact Mary Jane Plummer,
Director of Cultural Events Series.

Student Veterans Organization
Reading in Honor of Veterans
Wednesday November 13 * 7:00pm Osborne Newman Center (next to University Police)
Student Veterans Organization and Sigma Tau Delta are sponsoring a reading in honor of veterans. Everyone on campus and in the community is invited. Participants can read from literary works, memoirs, letters, diaries or histories. In the past, for example, one student who had done two tours of duty in Iraq read a poem he had written about his experience. Another student read from letters her father had written to her while he was serving in Vietnam. At the reading, we will also be collecting items for the CARE packages and/or donations to pay for the CARE packages. If you cannot attend the reading but would like to donate, items or contributions can be dropped off to Joanna Skelley in Dunkle 311. For more information, contact Mary Lutz at 301.687.4237.
