Director Mary F. Morten's film Woke Up Black focuses on the triumphs and struggles of five black youth ages 16-21 as they start their journey into adulthood. The film places at its center the voices of black youth - their ideas, attitudes, and opinions that are often overlooked in today's society.
As Ace, one of the documentary subjects, states in the film, "The youth do have a voice, but it's up to us to really speak our voice."
The film has been used in a variety of different settings, from school screenings to government workshops, and very recently, for After School Matters's 2012 professional development conference.

The Wise Kids by Stephen Cone
The Gene Siskel Film Center presents Chicagoan Stephen Cone's highly praised new movie The Wise Kids, October 26-November 1. Critics have hailed The Wise Kids as "honest, observant, and subtle" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times), "a tenderhearted gem...a guileless exploration of the growing pains of sheltered innocents" (Stephen Holden, The New York Times), and "one of the best movies I've seen this year" (J.R. Jones, Chicago Reader.)
A host of festival prizes and "Best of 2011" lists later, Stephen Cone's beautifully nuanced and affecting coming-of-age drama comes home to Chicago for a theatrical run.
In the time between Easter and Christmas, three best friends about to start college are poised on the cusp of adulthood. Raised in the strict but loving confines of a small town Baptist congregation, they each struggle with crossing boundaries. Brea, a minister's daughter, feels childhood faith dimming; Tim faces the realization that he's gay; Laura sees her friends slipping away into a world she can't begin to understand.
