Dear Shipmates,
Hope all of you enjoyed a wonderful holiday weekend. We gave the crew a day off on Saturday -- a very good idea since it was so miserable. On Sunday we got the jib and forestaysail on and lots of other little rigging projects completed -- we even polished all the wastebaskets!! It was raining off and on all day until 6 pm. Late in the afternoon a man came by and said we had a beautiful vessel. We could only agree!
Monday, May 27th, was such a wonderful day. We painted (and sanded some) on all the various projects, like the main cabin top, the blue around the edge of the deck and the top of the forward house . . . details, details, details!!!
We also worked on getting the brand new jib topsail ready to be bent on.
Tuesday was another wonderful day. We got the rest of the painting done, put on the jib topsail and foresail and picked up the repaired mainsail from the sailmaker.
Everything is getting completed quickly now. Most of our crew this year are new to the schooner. They are young, energetic hard workers.
We are so looking forward to a great summer of sailing -- new harbors, new adventures, new friends. Each spring as we sail out past the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, we experience a feeling of exhilaration.
It may be our last time to feel this as it is getting close with a new owner of our Great Windship. We'll do our best to keep you posted as events unfold. This could very well be our last summer sailing the Schooner Heritage. If you want to sail with Capts. Doug and Linda, come this year.
