Porch Perfect |
 An attractive home exterior is something many homeowners strive for but don't know how to execute. Having a welcoming porch can really boost your feelings of well-being when you approach your home after a long day at work or on the road and also does wonders for your homes curb appeal when trying to sell.
Ideally your front porch should serve as a kind of handshake to passers by, a connection point with the neighborhood and a welcoming first impression to visitors. It's the calling card of your home, giving visitors a preview of what they might find inside.
First evaluate the space. Is it small and intimate or large and multi-purposed? If it's small, you should make good use of the vertical space - the walls and ceiling will be key. A large space can be decorated in its own style just like any other room in your home. If furnished, ensure the decor matches the home, and accessorize accordingly.
Read on for more tips:
1) A fresh coat of paint is an inexpensive way to spruce up your front porch. Peeling paint on railings or floor is a real eyesore so that should be tackled first.
2) Change out hardware on doors and replace your house number with something that looks strong and enduring. Adding a beautiful iron handle or door knocker to your front door can completely change the look of your front porch without spending a lot of time, energy or money.
3) Add outdoor artwork especially made to withstand the elements that compliments your homes style and color scheme.
 4) Arrange large pieces of furniture facing outwards toward the street and small pieces facing it. Susanna Salk, a design expert and author of Weekend Retreats, suggests using a loveseat or sofa that can comfortably seat at least two people, at least one more chair and an ottoman that can also be used as storage or a coffee table. Accessorize without cluttering, using small touches that make the space pop, and that coordinate and pull individual furnishings together. Use bright outdoor pillows, twin urns on either side of the steps or stoop and fabric curtains to add visual contrast and interest.
5) Add a stylish outdoor rug to finish off the look, making it feel like a beautiful outdoor sitting area. Switch it out seasonally with coordinating touches like pumpkins for fall, evergreen wreaths for winter, and brightly colored eggs in the spring time.
6) Install iron railing with beautiful potted plants on top of the railing or on the ground in front for a beautiful, welcoming approach to your home.
7) Replace a concrete floor with tile or mosaic designs. This can be done in a few days with the right preparation and know-how, or hire an expert to do this for you.
8) Add a new iron Security Screen Door or completely replace your front door with an Iron door that will really make your entryway pop. You can even replace a single door to a majestic double door, to really give your home a grand entry!
