Beautiful door The holidays are long over, and while many are still working on those New Year's resolutions to lose weight, stop smoking, save more money or spend less time at work, some of us have a more difficult time sticking to them than others.  Whether those resolutions are long forgotten or something you are still working on, the sentiment behind them is the same. It's a new year and a fresh start; the perfect time for making positive changes.

We have a lot planned for this year, and we are excited to reveal what's to come in the next few months! We're making changes to our product lines, updating our website, and working on offering new products that we know you will love. So stay tuned for more on those things soon!

We're always looking for new and unique ways that our customers use, decorate and update our iron products, and along the way come across articles and ideas that we enjoy sharing with you. This month's newsletter will give you some tips on how you can make your home a happy place to come back to at the end of a busy day.  We'd love to hear about some of the ways that you make your home a happy place - feel free to share them on our Facebook or Twitter pages!

family6 Ways to Make Your Home Happy
Sicilain Railing
The phrase "A man's home is his castle" is said to have been coined by English jurist and politician Sir Edward Coke in the 1600s.  It can be interpreted many ways, but in general terms, your home is the place where you should feel most content.  Where you can make all things happen and where your surroundings are of your choice and taste. So, start as you mean to go on this year, and embrace your inner king or queen. Here are 6 tips to make your home your happy place this year.

1. Celebrate curves.  Soft, round furnishings make your living space cozy and inviting.  Choose rounded lamp shades, tables with curved edges, and accents which soften the room.  You can go with contemporary or more traditional furnishings in this style without changing the entire room's look and feel. Relax and enjoy!

2. Contrast keeps things interesting.  When you combine rich materials such as granite and more simple items like wicker and aged wood, you create a space which not only sparks conversation, it also appeals to an inner aesthetic sense.  Try it in the kitchen or bathroom, or a smaller space such as a guest bedroom, and experiment with intricate Tiffany lamp shades and shabby chic curtains to create a visual oasis you can really settle down in. Consider mixing cultures and periods too and choose styles from each decade to really create contrast in a room. We like this room styled by real estate broker Royce Pinkwater in collboration with designer Eric Cohler in which she used pieces from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 70s to create a warm and inviting sitting room. Fabulous!

3. Inviting entrances.  Your entrance way sets the tone for the whole house, so make a statement with a colorful piece of furniture or art that really speaks to your own style.  Invite in the light with a new door with sidelights or a glass insert that will really brighten up the entire house.  Many homeowners don't realize the impact a beautiful new door can make to the interior of a home and until they see it for themselves, it's hard to imagine. Light creates beautiful patterns on the floor and walls, and increases your entrance's visual appeal.  An iron door also increases the value of your home and is one of the best upgrades you can make, with a return on investment of between 80% and 100% according to recent studies

Whimsy 4. Wonderful whimsy. Knick-knacks keep a home from becoming too utilitarian and serious and can create a visual break from the monotony of a space like a hallway or boring mantle.  Include colorful displays of ornaments of things you love, or children's artwork hung with clothes pegs on a dull wall. Differently sized and shaped mirrors used as wall art are also a wonderful way to reflect light and brighten a dark area. Displaying sentimental items around your home is also a way to remember shared experiences, happy times and reminiscences that put you in a happy frame of mind.  Even after a busy day at work, or with the kids, a photograph of a wonderful vacation or a holiday family reunion can instantly transform your mind to a restful place.
Hiding the mess 5. No need for perfection.  Your home should be functional and work for you - but it doesn't have to be Pinterest-worthy or perfect to make it your happy place. So you have to let it go, and stop stressing about it. So what defines "functional"? Well, it's different for everyone, but to put it in a concise way, it should be clean enough for everyone who lives there to feel comfortable, organized enough so that everyone can get their business taken care of, and decorated enough to feel like it's yours.  Notice we used the word "enough" several times there? That's on purpose.  "Good enough" means that home is a work in progress, and once you make your peace with that, happiness will follow naturally.

6. The ancient art of Feng Shui.  Feng Shui is the art of creating a good "energy flow" in each room of the home.  The very first and most essential place that Feng Shui is said to make a difference is at the front door, because this is supposedly where your house absorbs "chi" (energy).  So take care of your front door and the home's occupants will experience heightened levels of well-being. This includes having an unobstructed path to the front door, free of yard waste, garbage cans and other items which can block the flow of energy. Ensure your front door opens widely without squeaks and has quality, functioning hardware. Read this interesting article for more information on Feng Shui for your home

96% ROI on Steel Entry Doors

Each year, Remodeling magazine does a study comparing average costs of popular remodeling jobs across 102 United States markets against their return on investment. This year we are blogging about it because at the top of the midrange project list (again!) is a replacement steel entry door.

Let's see how things measure up (read more...).
