 5 Ways to Protect Your Garage |
Your garage is an easy access point for burglary or home invasion. Expensive tools, equipment and vehicles are prime targets for thieves. If left unprotected, often times burglars can quickly access your garage, take what they want and leave quietly without notice. Anyone with a few spare minutes can get a step by step guide on how to break into a garage door by searching online, so protect yourself proactively by following these easy steps that can deter those would be looters.

1. Install an inexpensive slide lock on your garage door rail. These are available from any hardware store for less than ten dollars and can be installed by anyone very easily with tools most homeowners have on hand.

2. Have a Safe and Sound Security Shield installed. This device was invented locally and protects your garage door with a barrier that prevents access by coat hanger through the garage door header area. Available for less than $99 installed, the Safe SSS will provide peace of mind when you are home and away protecting access and theft through your garage. 3. Use technology to your advantage and download the Liftmaster app to your mobile device. This app works with select Liftmaster doors to allow remote access to your garage door and notification abilities which will alert you if you garage door is open. We've all left our house only to wonder if we actually closed the garage. Now you won't have to drive back to check! Contact your local garage door service company to get more information about the Liftmaster openers that are compatible with the app.  4. Replace any opener older that ten years with a side mounted opener which is equipped with a deadbolt that engages automatically each and every time you close the door. This wall mounted opener costs about $100 more than the average opener but prevents the six second coat hanger trick by making the door impossible to lift manually when the lock is engaged. 5. Install a timer - timers can be preset to close the door after 1, 5 or 10 minutes which is perfect for households where there is more than one person likely to be using the door or older children who may leave to ride their bikes and forget to close it. This is another way to give homeowners peace of mind when leaving the garage not knowing that whether you closed it or not, it will go down in the prescribed amount of time. There are a variety of options with different features such as motion sensors, light switches and smart phone connectivity depending on the compatibility of your garage door opener and budget.
