Advancing Catholic social teaching by educating and preparing parishes
to work for social justice
From the Director

"How can I find my seat, when you are sitting in my chair?"

Lynn CampbellCommuting to New Haven each day provides ample time for reflection (as much as one can do while driving), listening to the radio, and listening to books and talks on CD. Recently I listened to a talk by Dr. Vanessa White on leadership, presented at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. Dr. White is the Director of the Augustus Tolton Pastoral Ministry Program at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

She began her talk with "How can I find my seat, when you are sitting in my chair?" She spoke of the importance of developing new leaders for ministry, and the need to step aside from your current position and give others the space to move in. We must understand that these new leaders will not be starting where we left off, but will need some guidance and space for learning and growing. And, it may be difficult for us to see that the ministry is taking a different direction. Things do not have to be done the way they have always been done.

Social ministry is about evangelization. It is about the recognition of God and God's call. It begins with inviting others to respond to the call. In "Communities of Salt and Light" the Bishops write, "We are called to be the 'salt of the earth' and 'light of the world,' in the words of scriptures. This task belongs to every believer and every parish." We are evangelizing when we invite others into ministry.

I share with you some thoughts for your reflection. How am I empowering others to take the lead?  Am I recognizing the gifts and talents of others and bringing them into ministry? Who is ready to take on a new challenge?

In faith,

Lynn Campbell

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

"This happens today: if the investments in the banks fall slightly... a tragedy...
what can be done? But if people die of hunger, if they have nothing eat,
if they have poor health, it does not matter! This is our crisis today!"

Parish Launches "Ansonia Catholic Teen Organization"

Congratulations to Rev. Jeffrey A. Gubbiotti and Assumption Church in Ansonia on their new Cooperative Parish Sharing Project, Ansonia Catholic Teen Organization.

After conversations with a number of parish leaders, a parish-wide survey and discussions with local law enforcement, the parish identified challenges faced by the young people in their community.  The parish will form a group of teens who can be peer leaders and reach out to fellow "at risk" teens who are looking for direction and belonging. Thanks to the generous donations of parishes across the Archdiocese of Hartford, funds provided by CPS will help the parish hire a minister who will help them execute this project.

The goal of the Cooperative Parish Sharing program, managed by the Office for Catholic Social Justice Ministry, is to foster the development of sustainable social ministry projects which allow low-income parishes to address the needs in their own parish communities.

Watch for a complete listing of the grants awarded for the 2014-2015 program cycle in the July issue of the Catholic Transcript.

Hungry Summer

Summer is a time of high anxiety for low-income families who must provide 200 extra meals for each child when school is not in session.

Food Bag

Contrary to what many people believe, the highest demand for food assistance to hungry families is during the summer.  Nearly one out of every five children in Connecticut is at risk of hunger, which is more than 109,000 children in Connecticut Food Bank's service area.

Summer also is the time of year when food donations are at their lowest which makes the situation for hungry families even more difficult.

Garden basketHelp hungry Connecticut families who are dealing with the difficulty of keeping food on the table during the summer months by donating what you can from your own shopping cart or by sharing your healthy garden produce.

Conference Marks Fifth Anniversary

This year marked the 5th anniversary of the Bishop Peter Rosazza Social Justice Conference!  On June 14th, 300 people from around the diocese and beyond gathered together to pray for social justice, learn from each other, and encourage one another!

New to the conference this year, the OCSJM welcomed four parish social ministry leaders to speak about their work, in light of the four cornerstones of parish social ministry: Prayer by Migdalia Almedina, Direct Service by Deacon Stan Petrowski, Education by Lou Terzo, and Advocacy by Ana Landskron.  These four speakers set the tone for the day, showing that everyone has a role to play in social justice ministry.  Special thanks to them for their inspiration!

Throughout the day, participants attended workshops and visited exhibits to learn about a variety of social justice organizations and efforts.  A number of people used the time to network and said that they hope to bring this information back to their parishes.

A special note to our attendees: Please capture the energy of the conference, and remember that the OCSJM is here to assist you in bringing social justice to your parish.  If you would like more information about a specific organization or speaker, let us know and we can connect you. And contact the Office if we can help you in your ministry!

We will be posting materials from the workshops on our website shortly - watch the Home Page for updates.  If you loved Brother Mickey's keynote and were inspired by his stories, you can purchase his books and artwork at these websites:  World Library Publications; Clear Faith Publishing.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who made the day possible, including Brake the Cycle and the students, faculty and staff from St. Paul's Catholic High School. And of course, a big thanks to our participants who took the time to come to the conference. We hope to see you again next year!

Freedom to Serve

Catholic dioceses and parishes across the United States are once again encouraged to raise awareness of domestic and international religious freedom concerns during the third annual Fortnight for Freedom, June 21-July 4. The two-week celebration will focus on the theme "Freedom to Serve," emphasizing the link between religious liberty and service to the poor and vulnerable.

Fighting continues throughout Syria and threatens to spill into surrounding countries where tensions between Sunni and Shia Muslims remain high. Syrian Christians have been frustrated that they have not been invited to participate in peace talks or international negotiations about how to resolve the Syrian conflict. They fear that unless their voices are heard and they receive support from the international community, the Christian presence in Syria will dramatically decline, as it did in Iraq. On a more local level, national and local Catholic charitable agencies around the

country have long provided services to people in need, regardless of immigration status. However, several states have passed laws that forbid what state legislatures consider to be the "harboring" of undocumented immigrants - including actions that the Church considers to be Christian charity and pastoral care to those immigrants. State immigration laws affect the religious liberty of the Church because they have criminalized these acts of Christian charity and pastoral care. Please visit the Fortnight for Freedom webpage for resources and more information on how you can take action to protect religious liberty. We invite you to join us in prayer with the Litany for Liberty.

A Dream . . . Peace in Jerusalem

It all started during the last week of May when Pope Francis visited the Holy Land, saw the suffering caused by the fear of violence, and was moved to proclaim:

"The Holy Places are not monuments or museums for tourists, but places where communities of believers daily express their faith and culture and carry out their work of charity . . . May Jerusalem be truly the City of Peace."

Peacemaking demands first and foremost respect for the dignity and freedom of every human person, the rejection of all forms of discrimination and attempts to impose one's own point of view at the expense of the rights of others.

"Christians must wish to contribute to the common good and the growth of peace."

The Pope's dream continued when he returned to Rome. Two weeks later, on Pentecost Sunday, he was joined in the Vatican Gardens by Israeli President Shimon Perex and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, for a prayerful invocation for peace, an unprecedented historic event that, with the grace of God, may lead to what political negotiations have not been able to obtain.

As Christians, our contribution to peace and to the common good starts always with prayer, and then moves to action. Let us join Pope Francis to pray for peace in the Holy Land and participate with our Bishops in development projects and public actions, dedicated to favoring a just peace.

A Nun on the Bus; How All of Us Can Create Hope, Change, and Community

By Sister Simone Campbell. HarperOne, 2014

I found this a quick and easy read of 200 pages. Sr. Simone is bright, entertaining, and thoughtful. She shares her own background and path to living in community, becoming a lawyer, and practicing family law. The simultaneous timing of the Paul Ryan budget plan and the Vatican investigation of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) investigation propelled Network's Board of Directors and staff into quick and strategic thinking, resulting in the 2012 Nuns on the Bus.

The people she met and the stories she heard are powerful and set the stage for advocacy towards health care reform, a budget that gives priority to the poor, and comprehensive immigration reform.

Although I have met Sr. Simone on several occasions, I found that I got to know her and the work of Network much more deeply through this book. Her trust in the Holy Spirit is at the core of her being. Living the Gospel and doing ministry has always been the mission of the sisters.  We are blessed to have them doing charity and working for justice!
