We Are a Reconciling in Christ Synod

All synod offices will be closed on Thursday, November 24 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Beloved Children of God, my Sisters and Brothers of the Sierra Pacific Synod, ELCA this is my final contribution to our newsletter. I give deep gratitude to God for the blessing of call serving you as Director of Evangelical Mission and assistant to Bishop Mark Holmerud. I give thanks to God for each of you! Many of you have communicated your positive reception of words I have offered concerning stewardship. I pray you receive these words too as part of your ongoing discernment concerning Stewardship.

Everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We are not the "owners" of what we tend to think is ours. We are not owners of anything. We are stewards, and as stewards we are servants and managers of God's creation.

In Genesis God gives to humanity, us, you and me, the responsibility to till and keep and take care of the garden, God's creation the world. This assignment is just the first of many, many images of our role as stewards and managers in the Bible. The word "stewardship" comes from the same Greek word oikonomia which translates to "economics", referring to the management of goods and services in the world.

In the Bible, the steward is usually a supervisor or foreman, one who has been given "the responsibility for management and service of something belonging to another...the office presupposes a particular kind of trust on the part of the owner or master." Humanity, us, you and me have been entrusted with the stewardship of God's creation...as well as our lives and living, our time and our treasure...all are gifts to us from a loving God.

Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. This provides us, you and me opportunity for deep discernment and pondering from two perspectives. One, the call to be faithful stewards judges our idolatrous desire to be self-reliant and condemns our every mentality that views anything as truly ours by "ownership". Secondly, and most importantly, the recognition of belonging to the God who created us, redeemed us, and continues to love and protect us is fundamentally and foundationally Good News!

Beloved Children of God, my Sisters and Brothers this is Good News of God which inspires us to trust, gratitude and devotion. My prayer is trusting in God that we continue to acknowledge the blessing and joy of stewardship in our lives and our living!

God's blessings and peace be unto you all your days!

Assistant to the Bishop and DEM
