A message about Second Mile Giving and Mt Cross Ministries |
 |
 | Dear ,

I recently had someone not associated with the synod ask me what Second Mile Giving was all about. It occurred to me that not everyone may know what we are talking about each month, as we feature our Second Mile Giving partners. So, as Communications Coordinator, I'm going to communicate! Each month, we as good disciples and good stewards of the gifts we have been given, give our offerings to the church. Second Mile Giving is a way to go above and beyond regular offerings. Our ministry partners are organizations that are working with and in the synod, and are always in need of funding to continue the day to day good works they provide. How can you participate in Second Mile Giving? There are two ways to find out the "partner of the month": this weekly newsletter and the SPS website . Each has a link to a bulletin insert that you can use when taking a special offering. Once you have collected this extra giving, include the amount in your regular mission support to the synod, making sure that you notate that amount in the 2nd Mile column on the Treasurer's Remittance Statement. (Click here for the most recent version of this form, which includes our new mailing address.) Questions? Email us at info@spselca.org .This month's partner is Mt Cross Ministries . Mt. Cross Ministries' main site is located in the coastal redwood forest of the Santa Cruz Mountains, 20 minutes from the Santa Cruz beaches. Mt. Cross offers summer camp and retreat opportunities for all ages. Most Mt. Cross directed camps are held on the main site and many, like Day Camps, take place in communities all over northern California. Churches, schools, clubs and other organizations use Mt. Cross as their group retreat center by utilizing the Outdoor Conference Center (OCC). Mt. Cross provides facilities, meal service and program support (as desired) to make your group's experience as successful as possible. Many groups take advantage of the Challenge Course and/or climbing tower. You or one of your children may have gone to summer camp or participated in one of the Sierra Pacific Synod Youth Committee's events held at Mt Cross. Use this insert to encourage donations to your Second Mile Giving offering this month!

The 500th anniversary of the Reformation is an opportunity to rejoice in the life-giving, liberating power of the gospel. As part of the observance, we invite you to attend the Grace Gathering, in partnership with the 2016 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. This will be an opportunity to experience the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) when gathered as the ELCA Churchwide Assembly, prepare for further observances of the 500th anniversary and reflect on how the Reformation can continue to guide us today.

LEVN, the Lutheran Episcopal Volunteer Network, is looking for young adults (age 21-30) with Bachelor's degrees for an 11-month program of non-profit work and learning about social justice. From the end of August 2016 to the end of July 2017, our corps members will be provided housing, utilities, health insurance, transportation, spiritual direction, and a $400/month food stipend. There's also a $1000 re-entry grant at the end of the program for moving expenses.

The work placement sites for the upcoming program year include faith-based non-profits, secular non-profits, congregations, the Sierra Pacific Synod office, and our campus ministry at UC Davis. We meet each week for worship, dinner, and discussion. The corps members live in intentional community in a 4-bedroom apartment in Davis, CA. We're an ecumenical program, and applicants needn't be either Lutheran or Episcopal to apply-interest in Christian spirituality is the only expectation.   |
