A message from Rev. Nancy Feniuk, Bishop's Associate

Dear ,

Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands.  Reach out your hand and put it in my side.  Do not doubt but believe." (John 20:27)

This is a part of the gospel text many of us will hear this coming Sunday.  It introduces us, in the common parlance, to Doubting Thomas.  (I wish I could include some music here that would give us a melodramatic "duh duh duh" to indicate the tone with which the name should be read).  You probably already know the gist of the story:  on Easter Eve, the risen Christ showed up in a closed room and offered the disciples shalom and gave them the Holy Spirit.  But Thomas wasn't there.  He'd gone out. Maybe he needed to be alone.  Maybe this was his week to shop.  Maybe he was working on his resume'.  Whatever the reason, he wasn't there and it's not fair!

As you can probably tell, I like Thomas and furthermore, I think he has been tagged unfairly with a name that bears 2000+ years of baggage and judgment.  And John's gospel doesn't help things much.  After Jesus comes back and lets Thomas touch his hands and his side, and Thomas announces "My Lord and my God", John goes on to quote Jesus, "Have you believed because you have seen me?  Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe".

Now we can do all sorts of word study and exegesis on this passage and we can place it in context and recognize when John's gospel was written and to whom, but the simple fact of the matter is that in most of us (read: me) Jesus' words evoke guilt:  If I were a better disciple, I wouldn't have needed to touch and see.
Yet we do.  Sometimes we do need to touch ... and see ... and taste and smell and hear.  Sometimes it's just more than we can take simply on faith ... simply because someone told us.  Which is why we have bread (gluten AND gluten free) and wine (fermented and non) and water, lilies (with and without stamens) and incense, Handel and Brokering, Latin and German, Spanish and Tanzanian.  We are touching, tasting, seeing, smelling, hearing and believing disciples - sometimes simultaneously, sometimes serially. Which is a large part of why we gather together for worship.

And it isn't about whether we are good or better disciples.  It is about being human - deliciously, foolishly, ponderously, wonderfully human disciples.  And sometimes we just need to go ahead and be ourselves.  Because you know what?  Jesus didn't just show up that one time in that one way for that one group.  And we can count on Jesus to continue that pattern and keeping that promise.  Alleluia!

In Kind Gifts
The 2016 Sierra Pacific Synod will be collecting gifts for the following organizations.  Please share this information with your congregation in order that many will be able to participate.

In Kind Gifts will be NEW packages of WHITE underwear and socks for men, women and children to support the ministry of the Good Shepherd Clothes Closet.
GSCC is a community based, non-profit organization founded 20 years ago in Reno, Nevada that provides free clothing and personal care items to a large homeless and working poor population.  Each year, the Clothes Closet serves over 30,000 people from its location in downtown Reno.  The GSCC has recently extended its outreach to low income elementary schools and the Women's and Children Center.  Since socks and underwear are the most needed, but least donated items, our in-kind gifts will be very welcomed.  While Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is a "sponsor", the Good Shepherd Clothes Closet is not affiliated with the ELCA.  More information about this ministry is available at http://www.gsccreno.org/

Financial gifts will be divided evenly between:
1/3 to Lutheran Social Services of Nevada
1/3 to ELCA 25th Anniversary Campaign - World Hunger
1/3 to Sierra Pacific Synod Candidacy scholarships

2016 Synod Assembly Resolutions Process
Note new date and email address

Resolutions - and the resolutions process - are an integral aspect of our annual synod assembly.  As the highest legislative body of the Sierra Pacific Synod, the Synod Assembly requests action by congregational, synodical or churchwide expressions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America through resolutions.  Resolutions may be proposed or endorsed by synod congregations, conferences, discipling teams, task forces, affiliated organizations and institutions, or at least fifteen voting members of the Assembly itself.

Prior to their presentation to the Assembly, resolutions are vetted by the Resolutions Committee.  The Resolutions Committee is asked to "receive, review and prepare" resolutions so as to ensure that they are legal, factual and understandable.   Additionally, the Resolutions Committee works with submitters of resolutions to edit (or occasionally consolidate) resolutions for clarity and procedural purposes.   While the Resolutions Committee has authority to recommend action on any resolution that the Committee presents to the Assembly (including the adoption or rejection of the resolution, or a referral of the proposed action to another synodical entity), resolutions are normally referred to the Assembly without recommendation.

The 2016 Resolutions Committee humbly requests that resolutions to this year's Assembly be submitted to the Chair of the Resolutions Committee (emailed to Pastor John Valentine at resolutions@spselca.org) no later than Sunday, April 3rd.  Submitting them by this date will ensure that the Resolutions Committee has ample time to properly prepare and promptly distribute them to all voting members.

Generous People Living God's Love by Practicing Dreaming Together

"The human mind plans the way, but the Lord directs the steps."  Proverbs 16:9

For the past five years, I have been serving in interim ministry. An important part of this work involves helping the congregation to look to their mission for the future and to dream together about what God is calling them to. This work gives them hope about what is possible with God.
One way I would do this involved meeting with members in small groups where they would share with one another their hopes and dreams for the congregation.  Hearing the vision that others have is exciting and often sparks other ideas and insights. When we take the time to listen and dream together amazing things will happen.  God is present through all of this activity.

God has created us to dream and to imagine what the future can be.  And God has created us to do this together - in community.
  • Tell about a time when this group dreamed together and realized that dream.  What made that possible?
  • How did the group experience God's presence and guidance in realizing that dream?
  • What dreams do you have for this group and congregation for the coming year?
Haiku Prayer:
You created us
To come together and dream
To join You in hope.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE SYNOD
AND BEYOND
FREE BOUNDARIES WORKSHOP

As Rostered leaders in the Lutheran Church, we have the amazing privilege of being bearers of Good News to a world hungering and thirsting.  And as we go about the ministry to which we have been called, much of the time we are well able to listen and hear, to speak and be heard.

But then there are those other moments ... moments when maybe we don't operate out of our "best selves"; moments when we are tired, or cranky, or resentful, or lonely, or .... or ... or ...

And then there are those other moments when our members don't operate out of their best selves; moments when they are grieving, or insecure, or needy, or .. or ... or....

All these things have to do with boundaries.

It's been a while since a boundaries workshop has been offered here on our synod territory, but there are two coming up. They will be led by our ELCA consultant, Barbara Keller.  She is funny and down-to-earth, experienced and wise as they come.  It will be time well-spent. An investment in continued healthy ministry with good boundaries.

There is no cost to register for this event.

"When Lightning Struck! The Story of Martin Luther,"
by Danika Cooley

This historical novel on Martin Luther will immerse the reader in the dust and grit of sixteenth-century Germany. You will not only feel that Luther's struggles are your own struggles, you will enter the gates of paradise with Luther into the freedom of justification by faith alone in Christ alone. Danika Cooley is both an engaging writer and a careful and winsome theologian. As all good novels do, the reader will be drawn into the story from beginning to end. While this is not the in-depth study you will find in our Martin Luther in 3 Volumes series, it is a great read and comes highly recommended!
