A message from Pastor Paul Clark, Lutheran Campus Ministry Fresno
|
Dear ,
The church has earned itself a reputation for being an institution that is eternally behind the times, lagging like the blind runt of an escargatoire (pack) of snails. Social scientists comment on the inability of religious folk to adapt to change. We ourselves make jokes about it. But such a sweeping generalization doesn't faithfully capture the whole picture, for there are ways and places that we do not trail so far behind. Long before experts, including those that work for Portico, were telling us how important it is to exercise and tend to not only our physical body, but also our mind and spirit, we as Lutherans were employing missionaries to do just that work on our college campuses. For decades we have been walking the quads and hallways of colleges and universities, striving to engage young minds on issues of life, morality, and ethics. For years we have been inviting young adults not only to worship gatherings, prayer vigils, and Bible studies; but also to listen to voices that diverged from the status quo; to take up the mantle of serving our neighborhoods; and to engage in messy conversations about faith and modernity. Campus Ministry exists as an extension of the work of the church; the work of all of us as God's people. By curating the presence of our distinctive, grace filled, Lutheran voice at institutions of higher education, we tackle the challenging but necessary work of inviting young minds to engage and connect their intellect, emotions, and experiences, with their faith. Our campus ministries help empower students on their way to become rostered and ordained leaders in the church. We help students discern their way into post graduate lives where they must balance vocation, self, faith, family, and service. We provide the structure and support for students who think of new ways to feed Christ's sheep, empowering them to execute their various outreach, service or program ideas within our ministries without the constraints of our culture's prevailing fear of failure. And we witness young adults having their horizons broadened, their relationship to the world around them changed. Week, month, and year after year, this vital work continues to happen. Many thanks from each of us who engages in this ministry, to all of you, for your continued support of this missional work that we are up to.
Trust in God, Pastor Paul Clark Lutheran Campus Ministry Fresno

STEWARDSHIP DISCIPLING TEAM
MARCH COUNCIL DEVOTIONS
Generous People Living God's Love
...by pausing to experience God's presence in silence
"Be still and know that I am God"
Psalm 46:10a
This year, our Ash Wednesday service was in the form of Taize, with the dimly lit sanctuary full of candles, and the worship decadent with prayerful pauses.
As a talkative person, I both welcomed and questioned the intentional pauses we had planned for this worship service. Could we really begin the season of Lent in so much silence - aren't we supposed to talk about our wonderful theme for Lent? Plus, due to a combined worship service with another congregation, we happened to have 4 Pastors present and 2 seminary students. So many great preachers to chose from! Yet, we embraced the silence of the evening and, after the Gospel reading, let the sermon time be 7 minutes of silence, to listen for the Holy Spirit. It turns out that silence is rich with texture: our dimly lit lights had a gentle hum, the neighbor's dog offered a barking solo for a minute or two, traffic drove by our church on the road out front, feet tapped softly on the sanctuary floor inside, throats were cleared, and we sat together in auditory abundance.
God makes our lives abundant with expressions of love and life which surround us. How do we pause in silence during this season of Lent, to experience God's presence and hear anew the Holy Spirit's calls for our congregation?
~ Pastor Barbara Foltin, Stewardship Discipling Team
Discussion questions:
- Is it easier for your congregation to be still in the silence of God's presence or to be noisily active in mission?
- How can you as leaders embrace more fully these ways of being a church in mission? What does the Holy Spirit say when you listen?
- How can your congregation be God's generous people living God's love by pausing to experience God's presence in silence this Lent?

"God's Work. Our Hands. Sunday"
Mark your calendars for Sunday, Sept. 11, when congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will again have the opportunity to participate in "God's work. Our hands." Sunday and celebrate who we are as the ELCA - one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.
If your congregation cannot participate Sept. 11, please consider another time. The 2016 dedicated day of service will also mark the 15-year anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.
"The world can be a dangerous place. But there are some who, when disaster strikes, run toward the danger. These are first responders, firefighters, police and EMTs, who live out their baptismal vocation in service to their communities in times of intense need. They do God's work with their hands." - ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton
"God's work. Our hands." Sunday service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ - every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life - flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God's grace. View this video to learn how some ELCA members organized their 2015 day of service.
T-shirts will once again be available from Old Lutheran at Old Lutheran.com. The deadline for ordering your congregation's personalized shirt is Aug. 19.

Holy Saturday
In her March column for The Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton reflects on that space between Good Friday and Easter. She says it can be seen as empty, something to be resisted, but it also beckons us from our life to a life in Christ.

Clergy Tax Info
Reporting Health Care Coverage
This year, for the first time, you'll need to report health coverage when you file your federal income tax return, or potentially pay a financial penalty (unless you had Medicare as your primary coverage). This new requirement is part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA); you may have heard it called the "individual mandate."
Portico is here to help. We're mailing you a tax form that serves as proof of health coverage. Here's what to do:
Watch the mail for Internal Revenue Service Form 1095-B, Health Coverage. It shows the months that you and any covered family members had ELCA-Primary health benefits in 2015.
Keep Form 1095-B for your records. You don't need to submit it with your 2015 tax return.
Check a box on your 2015 tax return to indicate you had coverage.
If you have any questions, call Portico at 800.352.2876. They are there to help you navigate an ever-changing health care landscape, so you can stay focused on your ministry.
