                | | A message from Reverend Katy Grindberg, Assistant to the Bishop  |
 |
I am writing this from the beautiful Malibu hills. I'm here with rostered leaders of Region 2 (the five synods in the southwest) for our fall first call theological education event. We are gathered under the theme "We are Lutheran".  Bishop Guy Erwin, of the Southwest California Synod led the gathered group in conversations around being Lutheran in the 21st Century . As we talked, it was clear that (like most of us already know) there is no one way to 'be' Lutheran. We worship differently, we often have different understandings of how to read the Bible and apply it to daily life, we belong to a variety of political parties. We are from urban, suburban, and rural ministry sites. Like the ministries they serve, the rostered leaders gathered here are a diverse group, and express a variety of ways to 'be' Lutheran. One mistake many of us make is that we presume that our way of being Lutheran is 'the' way to be Lutheran. If we clap, dance, and shout in worship, we think 'that's Lutheran.' Likewise if we are more personally reflective with generous amounts of silence, we think that's what Lutheran worship looks like. Ditto with the organ, piano, guitar or drums. Is it Lutheran worship without the Apostle's Creed, or the confession and forgiveness, or the post-communion blessing? Most of us have a 'thing' (especially in worship) that makes it 'Lutheran.' But, as I am being reminded this week, there are a multiplicity of ways that Lutherans worship, read scripture, and engage in public life - and because Lutherans are doing it, all are 'Lutheran.' It will look and sound different from place to place, and this week I'm reminded of the incredible and beautiful variety in our church. Our challenge (especially those of us who are life-long Lutherans from Northern European descent) is to not assume that other ways of being Lutheran are not authentic - or that every life-long Lutheran looks like us! Can we, instead of proclaiming something as being 'not Lutheran', enter into conversation with our brothers and sisters, deeply listening to the stories and experiences of Lutherans that are not like us, and then affirming them, also, as beautifully Lutheran? (This may a good place to start: https://revtifc.wordpress.com/2015/11/07/living-lutheran-my-story/ )  I hope so - we, and our church will be richly blessed by these encounters! | | | ELCA seminaries explore shared learning exchange

CHICAGO (ELCA) - More than 70 representatives of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's (ELCA) eight seminaries convened here Nov. 1 for a two-day session to envision what a  "common learning exchange" could mean for the church's theological education network.

The unprecedented meeting of seminary presidents, board representatives, faculty and staff focused on the feasibility of the seminaries, each with a unique history, operating model and culture, to join in a common project to deliver a richer learning experience to current students and rostered leaders and broader ELCA audiences.

The convener of the meeting, the Rev. James R. Nieman, president of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC), serves as chair of the conference of seminary presidents and chief administrative officers. In opening remarks, Nieman said, "It is not an overstatement to say that this is a historic event. Never before has there been such a gathering of delegations from all ELCA seminaries seeking to rethink the future of theological education in our church." Click here to continue reading... |

SPS Interim Steering Committee Bullying in Congregationsinvites ALL interested pastors and interim pastors

 Tuesday, November 17
 Holy Cross Lutheran
 1020 Mocho St, Livermore, CA
 10 AM - 2:30 PM

Salad Potluck (Bring a salad, we provide drinks & rolls)

As interim pastors, we often have better chances of helping a congregation find freedom from a bully that has dominated the congregation for years.  Yet dealing with a bully is never easy, even when you know you will not be with them for years.  So how can we be more effective in working with bullies in congregations?

Kibbie Ruth, an expert in abuse prevention, will lead us in discussion over this issue on November 17, 2015.

For over two decades, Kibbie Ruth, MA, D.Min, has taught abuse prevention and intervention strategies, and consulted on cases throughout the country. Once a developer of effective community prevention programs, Dr. Ruth now concentrates on religious issues of abuse as the Founder and Senior Consultant of Kyros Ministry. She works with judicatories and congregations to establish safe relationships and faith communities, including prevention of child abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse, sexual harassment, professional misconduct and other abuses of power. She holds a certificate in Risk Management from Cambridge.

This event, sponsored by the Interim Steering Committee, will also be open to permanent pastors.   We expect a large turn out, so plan now to attend this special event.

We hope to see you November 17 in Livermore.
Yours in Christ,  Pastor Cindy Beck
