I have what I think of as a guilty little secret: I watch "America's Got Talent". Why "guilty secret"? I don't know. I guess it seems like I ought to be spending my time with something more substantive, more thoughtful, more deep .... I mean, Heidi Klum and Howard Stern (two of the judges) are hardly nobel laureates (not that that always guarantees quality, but ...).

A few weeks ago, as I eagerly anticipated watching the show, I got to wondering why. I came up with two reasons: first, I like that people of all ages and talent level show up to try out and as a result I get to see a 96 year old woman sing and dance (pretty well, actually) and 2 young brothers dance a mix of hip-hop, breakdancing and "smooth moves" (whatever those are!). Last year there was even a 90+ year old guy who pulled a car with his teeth (not sure I'd call that a talent, but there you go ... grace abounds!). Second, I like the judges! They are funny, kind, enthusiastic and seem to genuinely like what they do and who they get to meet as a result. The show makes me smile, laugh, and occasionally wince and after watching it, I feel better.

There's probably a third reason I like the show: it isn't about real life. Real life, especially lately, is a little hard to face. Racism is rampant. Sexism is ubiquitous. Homophobia continues. War is constant. Greed wins. And children kill. And innocent people are killed ... at church ... in bible study.

Last Sunday, I heard a seminarian (aka Kaitlin Winter Eulberg) preach an amazing sermon about what happened in Charleston. In the midst of calling us listeners to look in a mirror and face our own racism and entitlement, she also spoke a word of comfort and proclaimed the Gospel as she called us to hear Jesus' words of "Peace! Be still!" as a message to us in the midst of our chaos. She called us to move from being immobilized by our own self-protective numbness to being active doers of the Word. It heartened me for the day and encouraged me for the future of our church in the hands of preachers like Kaitlin.

I'm hopeful you, too, spent time considering the events in Charleston as part of your worship this past week. Another opportunity presents itself this coming week. Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton has called us to a day of repentance and mourning. She writes: "The members of this church, no matter where they are located, must think about, discuss and deal with this crucial issue of justice and compassion. It is the church's work. God's intention for all humanity is that we see the intrinsic worth, dignity and value of all people. Racism undermines the promise of community and fractures authentic relationships with one another. We need to talk and we need to listen, but we also need to act and speak out against inequity. Look with newly opened eyes at the many subtle and overt ways that racism infects and affects our communities. Above all pray - for insight, for forgiveness, for courage."

As residents of this country and as members of the Body of Christ on earth, we are called not only to seek comfort and hope in the Word, but to BE comfort and hope living the word. America may have talent, but as ELCA Lutherans, as Christians, we have grace...amazing, abounding grace.

A message from Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am in touch with you again today even as I am headed to Charleston, S.C., to be present at the funeral tomorrow of the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney, who was pastor at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and was a graduate of the ELCA's Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary.

Yesterday I shared with you a worship resource titled "Service of Prayer in Remembrance" for use in this Sunday's worship services.  Today I am sending you a revised version of this resource, now titled "
Service of Repentance and Mourning." The revisions are significant and important; I would not be in touch again today if this weren't the case. I received valuable feedback from several quarters yesterday, and I decided it was worthwhile to incorporate these responses into a revised worship resource. I hope you will be able to make good use of it.

I understand that it may be difficult for some congregations to incorporate this liturgy (or portions of it) into this Sunday's services. And I know that many of you offered prayers in response to the Charleston shooting in last Sunday's worship. We will need to be praying about, and acting in response to, this act of racism and hatred, and the sin of racism, for a sustained period of time. I encourage you to use your good discernment and judgment to be creative, flexible and resourceful in how and when you address this situation in your congregations - in worship, in education and discussion, in your collective actions. While this Sunday is designated as one of repentance and mourning for the ELCA, our attention to this cannot be limited to one particular day.

Included again for your use this Sunday is the
public statement I made June 18, the day after the shooting in Charleston. Share this with your congregation.

Thank you again for your ministry and all you do to share the good news of Jesus Christ and God's healing, redemptive power.
Your Sister in Christ,

The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton

Presiding Bishop

Health Care Law Changes Effective July 1 | Clergy Tax Journal

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Department of Labor (DOL) issued guidance (DOL technical release 2013-03 and IRS Notice 2013-54) that may impact how your church funds medical coverage for some employees.

The guidance states that, effective July 1, 2015, organizations may no longer directly pay premiums for an individual health insurance policy [a health insurance policy for an individual or family purchased directly from an insurance company (an "issuer") or through the Affordable Care Act's Marketplaces (also called exchanges)] for an employee, nor reimburse an employee who purchases an individual health insurance policy with dollars that are excluded from the employee's taxable income. These arrangements are sometimes called "Employer Payment Plans" [EPPs] or stand-alone health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs).

We Remember in Prayer...

Doris Haugen, the spouse of Doug Haugen, AIM, who is undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer near their home in Chicago.  Mr. Haugen is the Executive Director for Lutheran Men in Mission, and formerly served Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Auburn, CA.

We pray for our brothers and sisters at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., as they mourn the tragic deaths of nine of their community members, including the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, a graduate of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C. We pray for all those who grieve and that our houses of worship be places of peace and refuge. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Those who are battling wildfires and the families and wildlife that are affected by the fires.

Those who are affected by the ongoing drought, including those whose wells have now gone dry, ranch and farm workers, and farmers and ranchers.

For all those who work with communities that continue to face challenges of poverty, race relations, unemployment and sub-standard housing who are left feeling powerless.  Pray we all find ways to address the root causes and help bring necessary changes to eliminate these challenges.

A perspective from the Lutheran Office of Public Policy - California

This week I was blessed to be invited to a movie by my adult children, my wife, and her sister, and while not enthusiastic, it was a change of pace from sitting at the laptop, enjoying the dog, watching the Giants and A's on a free evening home, flipping to CNN and continuing to bathe in the sadness of recent events. Click here to continue reading
