S.C.R.A.P. Pancake & Sausage Breakfast

The Portage Valley UMMen are asking for help serving a pancake and sausage breakfast at S.C.R.A.P.; [Sandusky County Restorers of Antique Power]. This is held at White Star Park in Gibsonburg, OH over the Labor Day weekend, [Saturday, Sunday & Monday]. It is a huge tractor, gas engines, work horses and flea market with demonstrations of different farm implements.

We serve from 7:00 a.m. till about 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon with Country Flame Broiled bologna and sausage patty sandwiches at the lunch time. If you can donate 2 hours or till closing time any one of these days or all three would be greatly appreciated.

The men find themselves short-handed this year due to some illnesses with members. This has been an on-going mission for the past 20 years and we do not want to see this come to an end. We fund the truck & the Society of St Andrew with the proceeds.  For more information, visit the MWD Events page by clicking: MWD Pancake and Sausage Breakfast!
September is Hunger Action Month

Nearly 50 million people in the United States today are hungry or food insecure. Plan now to make September a time for your congregation to stand together against hunger, joining with the Society of St. Andrew to see that each person in this country has healthy, nourishing food to eat.  The Daily Calendar for Prayer and Action includes a scripture reading and related activity for each day of September. Using this calendar, your congregants will take direct action against hunger and give money that, through the Society of St. Andrew, will be used to put nourishing fruits and vegetables on the tables of our hungry brothers and sisters right here in the U.S. The West Ohio Conference ranks 7 out of the top 10 Conferences as of May 2015!  Let's strive to raise our ranking even higher next time!  For ranking information, click here!  For more detailed information on National Hunger Action Month, please see the MWD events page by clicking here: MWD Hunger Action Month.
Festival of Sharing

2015 Festival of Sharing is coming up on September 19!  Join us from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Otterbein University.  One way to impact the community here in Ohio is by creating kits that can be donated to arriving refugee families. These baskets are a great way to show hospitality to the displaced families who have left behind the lives they know, made the journey to the United States and will now be calling Ohio home. Kits may be dropped off at the local sites by September 16. You will need to call ahead before dropping off. For $ and Kit information or drop-off site locations, visit the MWD Events Page by clicking: MWD Events Festival of Sharing
Cherry Street Mission
Common Table: Thanksgiving 2015

Cherry Street Mission Ministries is launching a new expanded Thanksgiving food program.  Last year Cherry Street provided Thanksgiving meals for over 1000 households.  This year we are putting together a coalition of Businesses, Non-profit Organizations and Churches to extend our reach into the 140,000 households in Lucas County who deal with Food Insecurity.  This new program is called Common Table:  Thanksgiving 2015.  Our goal is to deliver 3000 dinners for 6 to the needy households in our community.  We believe that by partnering together we can have a much greater impact on our community.  United Way 211 has come on board to be the clearing house for households to register to receive a dinner package.

We are asking three things of our Church partners Greater Toledo/Lucas County.  One, this ambitious program requires a large amount of food.  Local Churches can run food drives for one, two or more of the items that will be placed in the food packages. Secondly the churches can refer families in need to the United Way 211 number to register.  Thirdly, a key to Common Table is the distribution of the packages by the local church in their selected areas.  We are asking that Churches raise a volunteer group to pick up the assembled boxes on Saturday November 21 to be delivered in their own areas.  It is our desire to not only close the gaps of Food Insecurity but to foster new relationships with God's people here in Lucas County. For more information on how to get involved, see the MWD events page by clicking: MWD Common Table: Thanksgiving 2015.
