Greetings!

Lapidus in new complex
We began this school year with one of the biggest celebrations in this college's history -- the opening of our new three-building complex.  The Cal Poly Pomona community had to wait years for this unveiling and I am thrilled to share with you that people have been ecstatic with the results.

Before and after its opening I saw many students stop what they were doing -- be it walking, talking on the phone or skateboarding -- to look at our new complex. It is rare these days to see people taking the time to quietly admire buildings and enjoy their beauty. I knew that a new facility would transform our approach to business education but I had no idea what it would do for school pride. As Dean, I cannot help but feel a deep sense of accomplishment.

A few days after the start of fall quarter we hosted a ribbon-cutting for our alumni, donors and friends. More than 600 people attended and I could sense their enthusiasm and excitement as they peered into our new classrooms.

Now that we have a new home, we cannot rest on our laurels. We must use our new facility to further business education and use our innovative learning spaces to enhance creativity and ideas. More than ever, we must encourage networking opportunities and enhance student and alumni engagement. If we utilize the facility to its fullest potential, our students will become increasingly more valuable in the workplace. I'm looking forward to making these goals a reality and I hope you'll join me in shaping the next generation of business leaders.

Best,
 Richard S.  Lapidus

Panoramic view of ribbon cutting

The new College of Business Administration three-building complex opened its doors for the fall quarter and students quickly realized something about their new home. Learning never looked so good.

Underneath a cedar canopy and flanked by the buildings, the Cal Poly Pomona community formally celebrated the complex's opening with a ribbon cutting and open house on Sept. 21. More than 600 people -- including alumni and donors -- attended the ceremony, some of whom traveled as far as Utah.

Lieutenant Governor Visits Cal Poly Pomona to Discuss Cybersecurity

Lt. Gov. Newsom Nearly a half-million jobs in this country remain unfilled due to the lack of qualified applicants. Looking for ways to create a highly skilled workforce, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and business leaders gathered for a special panel discussion at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Aerospace and Cybersecurity Workforce Development Summit on Oct. 9 included business leaders from companies such as Boeing, Visa and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory as well academic leaders on campus. Newsom said creating the highly skilled workforce is critical for California.

"You can't have an economic development strategy without a workforce development strategy," he added. "We are simply not producing the talent."

Computer Information Systems Professor Dan Manson participated and advocated for cybersecurity education. In addition to creating a nationally-recognized information assurance program, he has also fostered relationships with community colleges and the Los Angeles Unified School District in the hopes that teens and young adults will pursue cybersecurity careers.

ALUMNI NEWS

Alumna Uses Naming Opportunity to Honor Her Favorite Professor

Professor Emeritus Weber
Until his retirement in 1996, Professor Warren Weber dedicated his life to educating Cal Poly Pomona students. Now, thanks to a gift from a former student, Weber's legacy will live on with future generations.

When business majors near classroom 2015 in the new College of Business Administration complex sit on a bench to talk to friends, wait for class or work on their laptops, they'll be relaxing on the Dr. Warren Weber bench. Alumna Mardis Jackson ('80, management and human resources) bought the naming opportunity for the bench earlier this year and decided to honor of her favorite professor.

"He was very unique among professors," says Jackson.

Young Entrepreneur Receives Honor from Alumni Association

V. Tanon - alumnus An entrepreneur who created a multi-million dollar operation before the age of 40 was honored in April by the Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Association for his outstanding contributions to his profession.

Vic Tanon ('94, finance, real estate and law), founder of Emplicity, received the 2012 Distinguished Alumni award along with eight additional alumni representing Cal Poly Pomona's other colleges. The award is the highest honor a graduate can receive from the alumni association.

Tanon received his award from Dean Richard Lapidus who lauded Tanon as a rising star.

Tanon's company, Emplicity, handles human resource functions for businesses ranging from payroll to employee benefits to workers' compensation, among other services. Tanon launched Emplicity in 1995, just as outsourcing was becoming popular among businesses, big and small.

The company services approximately 6,000 employees in 30 states and has been named by Inc. magazine as one of the fastest growing private companies in the country.

Spotting trends early is nothing new for Tanon. He always had an eye for finding a need and seizing on the opportunity. At a young age he was making sandwiches in bulk for high school football players who tired of the same cafeteria food. He later used that entrepreneurial spirit to sell skateboards, shoes for Nordstrom and cars for Honda. By the time he graduated from Cal Poly Pomona he secured a job with Automatic Data Processing and became one of the company's top sellers in his first year.

In addition to his Cal Poly Pomona degree, Tanon also studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in its entrepreneurship program.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

Professor Waters 2
For more than a decade, College of Business Administration students in the Competitive Marketing Edge (CME) program have been leaving their imprint on San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire businesses. In this learn-by-doing class they have created strategic promotional plans, benefiting businesses such as Westfield Santa Anita Mall, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, the Claremont Club, Pacific Palms Resort and about 140 other local firms. And, every step of the way, Management and Human Resources Professor G.R. Waters has been there to oversee its success.

Now, Waters is part of a new CBA venture - the annual Cal Poly Pomona Bronco Business Plan Competition aimed at budding entrepreneurs.  Waters, along with MHR professors Deborah Brazeal and Mujtaba Ahsan, have plans to expand the competition in 2013 to make it bigger and more successful. The ultimate goal is help those Cal Poly Pomona students with the best business plans receive the knowledge, money and connections to make their ideas a reality.

Waters met with Public Information Officer Marisa Demers to talk about his projects and how entrepreneurs are changing the way business is done.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Alumna Terri Mitchell  As a recreational athlete who has ran three marathons, Terri Mitchell ('12 management and human resources) knows the familiar phrase "slow and steady wins the race."

Her best understanding of it, however, has been in the classroom not the running track.

The Diamond Bar resident -- who was a single mother for many years -- waited until her only child was fully grown before she even attempted to go to college. Then, the demands of her job allowed her to take one class at a time. Undeterred, Mitchell kept her pace until, 22 years later, she earned her business degree. Dean Richard Lapidus was so moved by her perseverance and determination that he shared Mitchell's life story during his Commencement address.

Mitchell talked with Public Information Officer Marisa Demers about her long -- but purposeful -- journey to achieving her goals.
