Often "unsung heroes," our community's doormen are often "first responders" in an emergency. As reported by local media,

Talbott Rescue Photo
Chicago Tribune Photo

Dwayne Neff, the doorman at the Talbott Hotel, saved the life of four-month-old Jordyn Rose Howeth, whose parents, residents at Delaware Place, were unable to find an empty cab to take her to the hospital when she became ill on Saturday, March 16. Noticing their panic, Neff hailed two nearby Chicago police officers, Karen Wojcikowski and Michael Seiser. As reported by the Chicago Tribune on March 17, "those Chicago police officers put the panicking couple into their squad car, turned on their sirens and wove through jammed traffic to Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, just blocks away." Just one day later, little Jordyn was baptized at Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral. Coincidentally, she celebrated with her family at the Talbott, "an event the couple planned weeks ago," according to the Tribune. SOAR salutes Neff and all our neighborhood doormen for their service and protection.

Northwestern University has informed SOAR that the demolition permit for 333 East Superior, the site of the former Prentice Hospital, was issued by the City to Brandenburg Demolition on Monday, March 18. Subsequently, a permit was applied for from Cook County for asbestos abatement (floor tile, ceiling tiles, etc.). This permit process takes ten days. Once the permit is issued, Brandenburg will start removal of all hazardous materials, using their licensed contractor; the process will take several weeks. The schedule includes erecting and completing a construction fence around the building today (Friday, March 22.) As the University and Brandenburg sends SOAR a detailed schedule of activities, including site and traffic plans, we will inform you.  If you have any questions, contact Brian Kittle, assistant director-facilities, Northwestern University, by email or 312.503.1054.

CPD Day Camp The Chicago Park District has changed its Summer 2013 registration dates in respect of patrons who observe Passover. Registration for Summer Day Camp and summer programs at Lake Shore Park begins at 9 am, Tuesday, April 16.

In-person registration begins on Saturday, April 20 at most parks. For information, visit the Chicago Park District online registration page. There is still time to sign up for spring classes, which begin Monday, April 1, at Lake Shore Park.

900 North DeWitt Place Development LLC reports that facade repair work at 900 N. DeWitt, mandated by the City and detailed in their last Facade Critical Inspection Report filed with the Department of Buildings, is in progress and scheduled for completion on or about May 1. All work will be done during permitted construction hours and no construction dumpsters will be placed on the street, in order to avoid disruption to neighbors. For information, contact Ross Gambril by email or 312.642.7020.

On March 14, Curbed Chicago reported a Crain's Chicago Business item regarding a possible future for the site of The Spire designed by Santiago Calatrava: "Ireland's National Asset Management Agency (which assumed control from developer Garrett Kelleher and the now-defunct Anglo Irish Bank Corp.), has hired a broker to sell off $93M in debt on the 2.2-acre Spire Hole Imageproperty at 400 N. Lake Shore Drive....This doesn't mean anyone has interest in resurrecting The Spire or its equal, only that a medley of new condos/apartments/hotel rooms may well appeal to a developer. Purchase of the debt will help settle the foreclosure case and bring some sort of solution to the years-old gaping hole--a bad neighbor to townhomes and towers clustered where the river meets the lake."

If you notice ongoing problems at construction sites in the neighborhood, please send photos and descriptions to Gail Spreen, co-chair of the SOAR Real Estate Committee. The committee will follow up with developers and elected officials.

Earth Hour 2013 is Saturday, March 23 from 8:30-9:30 pm. According to Alderman Brendan Reilly (42nd Ward), "In its seventh year, Earth Hour is a global movement that encourages everyone to take positive action for the environment by switching off non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about climate change. Presented locally by ComEd, join in as Chicago celebrates Earth Hour in front of Navy Pier's Ferris Wheel," selected as the City's symbolic gesture for Earth Hour. The program starts at 8:15 pm and the Ferris Wheel will go dark starting at 8:30 pm. Show your commitment by turning off your own non-essential lights from 8:30-9:30 pm to demonstrate your action in reducing environmental impact in Chicago.

Behind the Scenes

Thanks to SOAR member Maurice Champagne for sending this item about Streeterville's architectural secrets, from the blog written by architectural historian/critic Lynn Becker:

The French Directorie style in furniture and architecture, a small slice of restrained classicism between the imperial flourishes of the eras of Louis XVII and Napoleon, lasted only about four years, from 1795-99. On North Michigan Avenue, however, its spirit was revived over a century later, where it's survived down to the present day. Malabry Close

Except you've never seen it, because it's hidden behind the facade of what is now the Cole-Haan store at 673 North Michigan. It was the follow-up to developer Chester and Raymond Cook's Italian Court at Ontario and Michigan, where architect Robert DeGolyer transformed two existing apartment buildings into a conclave of upscale shops around a picturesque interior courtyard. Around the Community

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night....is an excuse for dog owners or dog walkers to avoid picking up after their pets! There are regulations but it's impossible for police to enforce in every instance. So-for the health, safety and beauty of the community and the reputation of dog owners everywhere-please pick up! In addition, do not let your dog urinate on buildings or in landscaped areas. The majority of dog owners follow the rules--SOAR thanks you.

Spring Soiree The Friends of Ogden, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, will host "Spring Soiree," a fundraiser for our community's neighborhood public school, The Ogden International School of Chicago, 24 W. Walton (PK-5) and 1250 W. Erie (6-12.) The event will be held 1 to 5:00 pm on Sunday, April 28, at the Chicago Marriott Magnificent Mile. Proceeds from the benefit will supplement funding received from Chicago Public Schools, applied to retaining music, art, and world language programs, and to purchase technology, updated instructional and library materials. If purchased before April 22, tickets are $125 per person and include beer, wine and hors d'oeuvres; after April 22 tickets are $150 per person. Purchase tickets . To discuss advertising opportunities in the auction catalog, starting at $25, or donating an auction item, contact SOAR Board member and Ogden parent Barbara Hennessy or Shelly Shannon by March 28; advertising and auction item donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Sparks The Arts Club of Chicago, 201 E. Ontario will host a free public open house on Saturday, March 23, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, with an artist's talk by the current exhibitor, Meredyth Sparks, at 1:00 pm. Brooklyn-based Sparks is best known for layering glitter, vinyl and aluminum foil over images drawn from pop culture and the historical avant-garde. A full-color catalogue for the exhibition will be available for purchase and signing. This exhibit runs through May 4. Regular gallery hours, open to the public, are Tuesday-Friday, 11:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. More information

SVC Logo Skyline Village Chicago is calling for volunteers for its "neighbor helping neighbor" program, which serves Skyline members in need of assistance for tasks such as grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions, picking out library books, accompaniment to medical appointments and home/hospital visits. For information, contact Nancy Almquist, 312.337.7671; Barbara Kite, 312.664.6520 or Skyline Village, 312.957.6060.

Friends of Downtown will hold a Brown Bag Lecture on Thursday, April 4, 12:15 pm at the Chicago Cultural Center-Millennium Room. Timothy Mennel will speak on "Jane Jacobs and the Problem of the 'Global City.'" Jacobs' landmark book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961), transformed the way people look at urban environments. On her birthday each year, cities around the world host neighborhood-scale tours that celebrate the qualities that she stressed: lively street scenes, mixes of buildings and uses, and strong senses of community. In advance of Chicago's first Jane's Walks on May 4-5, Mennel, co-editor of Reconsidering Jane Jacobs and Block by Block: Jane Jacobs and the Future of New York (2007), will discuss the continuing relevance-or irrelevance-of her work for Chicago today. No registration is required. For more information.
