Talking with kids about the Patrick Cannon issue
By now, we know that Patrick Cannon has resigned as Mayor of Charlotte. No matter the outcome, this is an important  historic event for the city, and a relevant learning opportunity for students. GenerationNation offers parents and teachers a resource page, tips, and discussion questions for non-political dialogue in the classroom or at home.

Youth Leadership Alliance of Charlotte-Mecklenburg
In 2013-14, GenerationNation partnered with the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to launch a communitywide youth council. The program is an expansion of GenerationNation's successful pilot project, Mecklenburg Youth Voice.

Over 100 teens representing 28 high schools have participated in youth council meetings and activities this year. They've weighed in on community issues such as city planning, education, economic development, and budgeting; hosted dialogues with city, county, and CMS officials; created a candidate guide for the local election; participated in service projects; represented Charlotte at local and state events; and other activities.

They are learning a lot. "I used to think that one political party had all the answers. Now I understand that leaders on both sides have good ideas and intentions," says Stuart. "I will remember, and use, what I learned forever. This is a great way to end my high school years!" adds Lade.
Students will share a report later this spring. Exciting plans are being made for the 2014-15 program.

All local high school students are invited to join the youth council. Learn more, read what community leaders say, and follow youth council activities

Election 2014
In a few weeks, NC citizens will head to the polls to cast their votes in the Election 2014 primary. Offices on the ballot include US Senate and House. K-12 students will also have an opportunity to learn about the election process and make their voices heard. Stay tuned next month for updates from GenerationNation about the online mock election!
