Inauguration and MLKWith the presidential inauguration and MLK Day, this month is the perfect time to teach about government, leadership, reading and writing information, and problem-solving.
GenerationNation provides a variety of hands-on activities to help students learn while watching, reading about, analyzing and discussing the Inauguration and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - all in a non-political, non-partisan way. Activities are tied to Common Core and NC Essential Standards for Social Studies.
Multiple activities including learning about the Inauguration, reading texts and watching videos of historic Inaugural addresses (text: Washington - Obama; video: Truman - Obama), analyzing the President's Oath of Office and address, writing a speech for the President, crafting news headlines, and more. After the event, videos, news coverage and updates will be posted so that you can maximize the learning opportunity in the coming days and weeks.
Students analyze the "I Have a Dream" speech and envision their own "dreams" for their schools, neighborhoods, communities and nation.

Youth VoiceHigh school students in GenerationNation's Youth Voice program have had a busy month.
They met North Carolina's new Governor, Pat McCrory and discussed CMS policy with CMS Superintendent Heath Morrison. Over the next few months, the students will serve on CMS task forces and provide valuable student perspectives on strategies to move the district forward. We can't wait to see what happens next!
Youth Voice Leadership Alliance is a youth council of leaders and problem-solvers. Please encourage your students to get involved!
More infoWay to go!A whopping 100,000 local students weighed in on Election 2012 candidates and issues through GenerationNation's Kids Voting mock election here. (For comparison, national media organizations Nickelodeon and Scholastic hosted their own mock votes - with only about 250,000-500,000 NATIONAL participants each.) That's because of YOU! Clearly, Charlotte's students are well on their way to being lifelong, active citizens!
