The Last Sunday of Advent
|
"The angel said, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" The angel said to her, "...Nothing will be impossible with God.""

Advent 4
The Annunciation
The angel announces to St. Mary that she will be the bearer of God's Son to the world. The message begins by saying "Do not be afraid." God has a way of breaking into our lives and changing them ... casting away darkness, putting sin to flight, binding up old wounds, making whole again that which feels broken, declaring pardon for wrongs we've done and asking us to forgive where wrongs have been done to us, casting light and love on the whole world over ... again and again and again. So often, that annunciation, that announcement of God's, begins by reassuring us not to be afraid. This kind of God - God who loves when it doesn't make sense, forgiving when we might think something or someone is beyond forgiveness, making whole what we believe to be broken and gone forever, opening our eyes that we might see again goodness - this kind of God shows us a new way to live by beginning in love. That changes us and change, even when it is for the better, makes us uneasy and anxious mostly because it seems too good to be true. But in the annunciation to St. Mary that she would give birth to the Redemption of the world the angel reminds all of us that with God, nothing is impossible. This last Sunday of Advent is all about our letting go of our fears in our lives and believing that as impossible as it may sound, absolutely nothing is impossible with God.

St. Columba Choir & Choristers
at the Cathedral
Bishop Wright invited the St. Columba Choir and Choristers to sing at the Cathedral of St. Philip on the 3rd Sunday of Advent for Diocesan Confirmation Mass. Our combined choirs of 23 left St. Columba's after Mass last Sunday and traveled down to the Cathedral where they sang for this Diocesan liturgy and a crowd of over 1,000. It was a true honor to be invited by the Bishop and recognition of the incredible choir we have! Thanks to all the Choir and Choristers for their hard work week after week, and especially at Christmas. We are so blessed by their ministry each week and are all so grateful for the leadership, time, and phenomenal talent Daniel brings as our Director of Liturgy and Music. Soli Deo Gloria!
