Quote of the Week

As we settle into bed waiting to fall asleep, there are often two tracks our mind can take. Tonight let's not get on the train that replays our worries, challenges, weaknesses or mistakes. Instead let's board the train that replays our blessings, our strengths and our dreams for the days ahead. If your mind gets off-track, bring it back to more positive thoughts and fall asleep inviting dreams of confidence and hope.

Daily Lore and Legend

May 30
On this date in the year 1431, French heroine and military leader Joan of Arc was burned alive at the stake as punishment for committing the crimes of Witchcraft, heresy, and "being given to the forbidden arts of magic and divination."

 Wit of the Week

And out of the chaos, a voice spoke:Smile and be happy, for it can always be worse'. And I smiled, and I was happy, and it did get worse.

Shop Chat

Perhaps in Australia we mainly have just "black Hippies too" . . . . see news stories below.  Hilary from the old Goth Shop "Mortisha's" in Melbourne used to refer to "Hippy Goths".

The other article quoting self harm rates seems awfully high too compared to the Australian scene.

Once, years ago when we had our shop in Brunswick Street Fitzroy, Hayden and I were taking a walk in the nearby Exhibition gardens at night when we passed a younger goth girl we knew, sitting unmovingly on a swing starting down at the ground.  I don't consider myself at all empathic or psychic, but as we walked past (she didn't look up and see us wave) I felt a huge wave of sadness pass over me.  About six months later she committed suicide.

On the other hand I am aware that not everyone is naturally bright and overtly enthusiastic like me, Hayden can be much more the dark brooding artistic type, especially when solving a problem

. . .There is also a good video on TED Talks you can look up on being an introvert in an extrovert world.

In the News - 'Alternative teens nearly 7 times more likely to attempt suicide'

Almost half of "alternative" teenagers - that is, teens identifying as belonging to goth, emo and punk subcultures - self-harm, and nearly 1 in 5 have attempted suicide, according to new research.

The researchers studied 452 German school pupils aged 14-15. The pupils were asked to describe how strongly they identified with specific youth cultures, such as alternative, "nerd," or "jock."

The study also collected data from the students on their gender, immigration status, their parent's social and economic status and any physical bullying or verbal harassment they experience - all of which are risk factors strongly linked to self-harm.

. . . . .The study reports that identifying with the alternative subculture is a stronger predictor for teenage self-injury or attempted suicide than being repeatedly bullied.

   . . . .

Although previous research has suggested that there may be a "socially contagious" element to self-injury - as the majority of adolescents in these studies were found to have friends who also self-injure - the new study found that only a minority of teenagers self-injure in an attempt to "feel more part of a group." . . .

In the News - Going Goth in Hamilton (NZ)

 . . .Hamilton's resident goth Anton Wanderer will have a glass of wine, dress gothically and be with friends for World Goth Day  . . .{last week}

The occasion, which began in England in 2009, is yet to reach popular levels in New Zealand but one local goth will make an effort to celebrate the day.

Wanderer said he won't be drinking out of a goblet; the wine won't be animal blood and he won't be undertaking Satanic rituals.

"There are some misconceptions out there about goths. A German friend who came over to stay in New Zealand told me what being 'goth' in Germany meant and it's pretty extreme what they get up to. He said there are no goths in New Zealand just black hippies."

His friend was referring to the black clothing goths wear and the New Zealand goths' lack of appetite for satanic rituals.

Wanderer said New Zealand goths are more "sensitive" souls with an "intellectual" appetite.

"They are more about the aesthetics and the look than anything else.". . .

In the News - Newspaper 'regrets' promoting wiccan prostitute (US)

. . . . . .Staff at a US newspaper received a shock on Friday when they discovered a witch profiled in the paper's "Faith and Values" section was also allegedly a prostitute.

Intelligencer Journal executive director Barbara Hough Roda published a statement online on Monday expressing her regret that the woman's extracurricular activities were not picked up by editorial staff.

. . . . ."Had this information been mined earlier, the story would never have been written, let alone published," she said.

Your Say -

Hi Margaret

. ..  How is your back now? I hope it is improving and you are no longer in pain because you haven't said anything lately in your newsletter and I have been wondering how you are and hoping that all is well.

Bright blessings
S

Hi S,

my back is good but I am still accepting reiki  - for my shoulder now - the shoulder was stiff before which is why I damaged my back in the first place, but while the back got better the shoulder hasn't - I'm sure its all got to do with sitting down at desks and card tables too long - but I'm no longer athlete / runner I once was - LOL!

Margaret

PS -  Louise Hay might say I have a sore shoulder from trying to break down / through something, or perhaps shoulder too many old burdens . . .all true to some extent . . .M
