Message from Jennifer
2012 Jennifer Stockard

Dear Friends,

The calendar may say that it's Fall, but we know differently. It's already winter in many parts of the country. From that odd early October storm in the upper Midwest to Hurricane Sandy and the blizzards in the East, it is clear that cold weather is here to stay. It's also clear that the need for warm winter coats is greater than ever. Now is the time - and today is the day - for us to work together to help keep people warm. If you have an extra warm coat to give, please use the Donate a Coat link on our website to find a coat drive near you.

If you have an extra 15 minutes, check out the ideas in our "15 Minutes to More" program. You may discover that you have just enough time to make a difference today.

With heartfelt thanks,

Jennifer
The Need

Going Digital Helps Us Help Them: Did you know that many libraries and community service agencies offer free computer and internet use to the public? These free resources make it much easier for people in need to find help. We're grateful that we have the opportunity to be part of that process. Our website and Facebook page make us visible to people searching for warm coats as well as to people with warm coats to give.

Through social media, we recently heard from a mother who was living in a van with her 5 children. She reached out to us for information about finding coats and boots for the family. They attend school and get their work done to the best of their abilities, but they worry about the winter weather. Through a brief exchange of posts, the mom got some ideas and started her local search for assistance. We're very proud to be part of a nationwide network that brings families such as this one into the digital world and makes health and comfort a possibility rather than just a dream.

Getting Organized

Each One Reach One!

KIND WarmCoat

When the recent weather crisis in the northeast hit, we (like you, perhaps) felt somewhat powerless to make a difference from so far away. After a bit of research, we learned that that the best things to do are things that we at One Warm Coat actually do every day: reach others with news and help them make connections.

When individuals contacted us to volunteer, we reached out to our One Warm Coat agencies and helped them get connected. When we learned that some agencies were without power or phones - or fuel - we reached out to our Facebook community and encouraged them to share the needs with donors and volunteers in the local areas.

So, what if you're not a first responder? A personal touch on the phone with someone in crisis, a social media "share" of information about local resources, donation of your time or a monetary contribution to the appropriate agency are all good ways to help. We call it an "Each One Reach One" movement. Hope you'll join the movement today!

One Warm Coat and Head Start to Warm the Winter for Kids Across the Country!

Thanks to the generosity of individual and corporate contributors during last year's Warm Coats & Warm Hearts national coat drive, 15,000 children will receive brand new warm coats this winter! We are excited to announce that, starting now, the National Head Start Association (NHSA) is helping us deliver the coats to children in Head Start programs across the U.S.! With the help of our Warm Coats & Warm Hearts partner, Burlington Coat Factory, we'll share the warmth of brand new coats with Head Start families in eleven cities.

Yasmina Vinci, Executive Director of the NHSA, tells us that they, too, are thrilled to be part of these heart-warming events. "No one should ever worry that they will be cold during the winter. These coats provide both warmth and security to the children and families who receive them." We couldn't agree more!

This month, and throughout the year, we send our deep appreciation to those whose contributions to One Warm Coat during last year's Warm Coast & Warm Hearts national coat drive make giveaways like this possible.
