"Happy Birthday to You" has officially entered the public domain, thanks to a court battle fought by the documentary filmmaker Jennifer Nelson.

The battle started years ago when Nelson was billed $1,500 to use "Happy Birthday to You" in a documentary. This was the price of licensing the song still under copyright.

Flabbergasted that the world's most popular song, which could be traced back to 1893, could still be under copyright, Nelson filed a class action suit against Warner/Chappell Music, the group claiming rights to Happy Birthday.

She won!

In this new short documentary, Nelson tells the story of the song and her four-year struggle to give Happy Birthday back to the world. Thank you Jennifer!

Prince's custom-built Yellow Cloud Guitar was purchased by noted guitar collector Jim Irsay for $137,500. The bright yellow solid-body electric guitar features all gold hardware, Schaller tuners, a Floyd Rose tremolo, single volume and tone knobs with a three-way switch and two EMG pickups. The 22-fret fingerboard is adorned on the front and sides with Prince's Love symbol.

IN THE BASSMENT
Fodera Guitars is proud to present the Kestrel. The Kestrel (the bird) has a dynamic look when in flight that the builders found fascinating. A very rare, old-growth, one-piece Brazilian Rosewood top was selected as the backdrop for the hand-cut Mother of Pearl inlay and a two-tone Brazilian top that includes both sapwood and heartwood was used to create the effect of sky and horizon.

Like films, the history of effects pedals is littered with works that are never fully appreciated in their time. Often companies discontinue a product before its power is fully realized. However, word eventually gets out which leads to astronomical used pricing on certain mythic pedals. Here's a look at few examples of pedals that are just begging to be reissued.
ARTIST AWARENESS

During the heyday of surf instrumental music in the sixties, there was a now-legendary Queen of the Surf Guitar. She was a 13 year old girl named Kathy Marshall. She didn't have her own band, but she did sit in with several of the top bands of the day. Once, Kathy even played with Dick Dale. She was rightly recognized for her talent, but it was the fact that she was a girl and could show up the boys that earned her the big buzz.
