Mapping a nation of regional clusters
The U.S. Cluster Mapping Portal (ClusterMapping.us) provides over 50 million open data records on industry clusters and regional business environments to promote economic growth and U.S. competitiveness. The project is led by Professor Michael Porter through Harvard Business School's Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness in partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Economic Development Administration.

New White House Fact Sheet Announces POWER Initiative Recipients
The Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization (POWER) Initiative is an Obama Administration effort with the goal of effectively leveraging a range of federal economic and workforce development programs to assist communities negatively impacted by changes in the coal industry and power sector. On October 15th, 36 awards totaling $14,546,457 for partnerships in 12 states and tribal nations were announced. See the list here

Maine Food Industry Study Highlights Cluster-Based Development
In Maine, there is a rich tradition of growing, harvesting, and manufacturing food and beverages. To understand the potential of these industries for greater growth, researchers from the John F. Kennedy School of Government and Harvard Business School investigated the cluster dimensions of Maine's agriculture, seafood, and food and beverage processing sectors. The research team collected and analyzed data on Maine's economic performance, the performance of its traded food cluster, perspectives of business leaders, and cluster growth initiatives from other regions. SBA Funds Three New Regional Innovation Clusters
On October 15th, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced the addition of three more cluster organizations to the portfolio of communities supported through the SBA Regional Innovation Clusters initiative. These initiatives are the BioSTL Bioscience Cluster in St. Louis, the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Cluster in South Kansas and Oklahoma, and the Wood Products Cluster in the Appalachian Ohio Region. The SBA funding will strengthen opportunities for small businesses within each selected cluster initiative. Read more |
