Mapping a nation of regional clusters

The U.S. Cluster Mapping Portal (ClusterMapping.us) provides over 50 million open data records on industry clusters and regional business environments to promote economic growth and U.S. competitiveness.  The project is led by Professor Michael Porter through Harvard Business School's Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness in partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Economic Development Administration.
U.S. Commerce Department Announces Up to $35 Million in Available Funding Through Obama Administration's POWER Initiative
 
On May 11, 2015, the U.S. Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration (EDA) joined U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Thomas Perez today as he announced that up to $35.5 million in funding is now available through the Partnership for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization (POWER) initiative. POWER, which was announced at the end of March, is an EDA-led, coordinated effort among multiple federal agencies using existing resources to provide integrated and coordinated investments in communities and workers negatively impacted by changes in the coal industry and power sector.  Read more
Porter Prize India Applications Now Open

The Porter Prize recognizes the strategic acumen of corporations in India and is named after Harvard faculty member Professor Michael E. Porter. Categories include Enabling Social Progress, Creating Shared Value, Leveraging Unique Activities, and more. The award has a robust three-stage process of making an application, followed by a strategy audit and jury evaluation. Organizations participating in the Porter Prize award selection are also automatically qualified for the IFC-Mint Strategy awards. Organizations are invited to apply by July 31, 2015. The awards ceremony will be held on September 25, 2015 in New Delhi.   Read more
Brookings: Manufacturing Startups Head for the Cloud (and Your City)
 
A variety of specialized incubators and contract manufacturers available through the cloud of remote computing and other resources is making it easier for hardware dreamers and startups to obtain advice, support, and access to support services, including outsourced manufacturing. In short, the new tools and supports for hardware startups could be really important for cities. If hardware startups become more like software ones, and the U.S. can keep more of its high-value manufacturing onshore, U.S. cities and metropolitan areas will be able to bolster technology development and ground it here, to the benefit of U.S. metros.   Read more
U.S. Department of Commerce and Columbia University to Host The Future of Urban Innovation Summit on June 9, 2015
 
At the crossroads of discovery and commercialization, The Future of Urban Innovation Summit will be a one-day event focused on the various channels that comprise the innovation ecosystem. The summit brings together entrepreneurs, industry, universities, Federal, State and local government, investors and thought leaders to engage on the future state of innovation and how they can work together spurring economic growth. The event includes panels on the evolving role of urban innovation in the American economy, the role of government and universities in technology development, and discussions on what investors and startups want to see in developing policy around innovation.

Valid Evaluation and Kauffman Foundation Announce Data Collaboration Project

On April 28, 2015, the Valid Evaluation (Valid Eval) and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation announced that they are collaborating on research to more accurately pinpoint paths to success for startups and small businesses. The partnership will delve into research on Valid Eval's multiple expert evaluations of more than 2,000 companies throughout the United States to try to understand the impact of structured feedback and evaluation in the entrepreneurship process. The Kauffman Foundation is a leading force in research and policy topics on entrepreneurship. The partnership is part of Kauffman's Startup Data Initiative program, which is attempting to better understand how critical segments of entrepreneurship programs work, such as evaluation and feedback, and what can be done to improve specific aspects of entrepreneurial support delivery.   Read more

$3 Million Available to Coal-impacted Communities under White House POWER Initiative
The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) has announced the availability of $3 million in planning assistance to communities impacted, or which may be impacted, by contractions in the coal economy. These funds are made available as part of the Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization (POWER) Initiative, a new interagency effort to assist communities negatively impacted by changes in the coal industry and power sector.

Successful applications will enable affected communities to develop detailed strategies to diversify their economies, create jobs in new or existing industries, attract new sources of job-creating investment, and/or how to provide a range of workforce services that result in industry-recognized credentials for high-quality, in-demand jobs. Funding will be available until expended or until September 30, 2015.
