Mapping a nation of regional clusters

The U.S. Cluster Mapping portal (ClusterMapping.us) provides over 50 million open data records on industry clusters and regional business environments to promote economic growth and U.S. competitiveness.  The project is led by Professor Michael Porter through Harvard Business School's Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness in partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Economic Development Administration.

New England Ocean Cluster unveiled as economic engine

On October 16, officials announced the successful establishment of the New England Ocean Cluster in Portland, a new waterfront incubator for companies focused on opportunities such as food processing, boat building, energy production, fishing, aquaculture, biotech, biomedical, pharmaceuticals, advanced materials, retail products, health and wellness, marine technology and applied science. The enterprise is "focused on commercialization of new products related to the ocean as a resource," a city press release explained. "The goal of the cluster is to create, encourage and spinoff new companies and products with cluster members with the goal of utilizing 100 percent of materials being harvested from the ocean, while focusing on higher and higher margins."  Learn more
Cleantech Innovation in Europe

"The original idea was to create clusters of excellence", says Bou in a Skype interview from Barcelona, "but it was found that innovative companies were scattered all around Europe and were not willing to move. So then it was decided to set up innovation networks. In 2008, EIT was created for this purpose, and they then launched the three KICs." The way it works is that one of KIC InnoEnergy's scouts spots a promising startup - or, more often, a startup applies to KIC InnoEnergy - and an assessment is carried out. Bou: "We look if the idea is feasible, innovative. If there could be a market for it. If it's scalable. Also, if it helps to solve one of the three challenges of the energy trilemma: improve energy security, makes energy more affordable, or helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions."  Learn more
