What a great start to the year we have had so far! I would like to say a BIG thank you to all of our parent community for your very generous support so far this year. We have had such an amazing time and huge success with all of our PTA programs. From the Ice Cream social, Walkathons, Pumpkin Bash and Dining for Dinero get togethers, we have had a great time getting to know one another and strengthening our parent/student community. I cannot end the 2015 year without saying the biggest of big THANK YOUs to all of our parent volunteers. Honestly, with the hours that you put into Passport, Reflections, Art Appreciation, Walkathon and all the many, many other activities we run throughout the year, you all have a special place in this world and we can never say thank you enough!
I wish you all a happy holiday break and look forward to seeing you in the New Year.
Sabrina Pinto Puesta del Sol PTA Co-President

Noteworthy Fundraising Successes!
|
|
Thank you to all who have contributed towards the $175,000 Annual Fund goal, thus far. Our focus this year is on community building fundraisers. Together we HAVE reached our Walkathon goal of $50,000! Examples of how your PTA financially supports, in whole or in part, include:
- Four Amity Intern salaries
- International Festival
- Art Appreciation
- Passport Club
- SITA
- Reflections
- Science Fair
- Garden Club
- Academic Challenge
- Specialist Grants for Art, Band, Orchestra, Library, Music, P.E.
- Grants for student/family support to include the Resource Specialist, the Counselor, the Nurse, the Speech Specialist, and the ELL Specialist.
- Additionally, our Dining for Dinero, Clothes for the Cause, Tea Clothing Fundraiser and Box Top Collection have raised $1,383.20! This could almost fund the grants for all four of the 5th grade teachers! We are looking forward to continuing to grow the community and achieve our Annual Fund goal through more great events in the New Year!

WE WOULD LOVE YOUR HELP for the 2016 Puesta del Sol Auction!
|
|
SAVE THE DATE: Noche de Carnaval, March 19, 2016
The 2016 Auction Committee is in need of an AUCTION VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR. The Volunteer Coordinator will recruit volunteers and give them work assignments at the auction based on volunteer availability and auction needs. This effort requires calling, emailing, and talking to parents to recruit volunteers, placing them on the volunteer schedule for the day of the auction, and training and managing volunteers the day of the auction. This isn't a huge commitment throughout the school year- we just ask that you attend our January, February, and March Auction meetings and be available all day on Saturday, March 19th, to be the volunteer buddy. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out to Alicia Filippini, afilippini@concordmgi.com.

Fridays beginning January 15
Bomba is a traditional music style, of Puerto Rican and African origin, featuring dance and percussion. It is described as a dialogue between dancer and drummer -- as if the drummer were challenging the dancer to a rhythmic duel. La Bomba is much more than dance - it is a musical ritual which acts like the loom in a fine weaving. It brings communities together and inspires young people to gain knowledge of not only the fundamentals of dance and music, but also the history of the people within their community. The class is taught in Spanish by two local artists, Maestro Otoqui and Maestra Naomi. One or more parents of students participating in the class will also be present to help with attendance. Dates: 8 weeks on Fridays (after school) - Program starts January 15th and proceeds through March 11th - January: 15, 22, 29

Birthday Book Club - While you're doing your holiday shopping, don't forget about the Puesta del Sol Birthday Book Club and make a donation in honor of your child's birthday! We ask that the book be new and hardcover or "like new" condition. You may choose to write a check for $20 to the Puesta del Sol Library that will go towards the purchase of a new hardcover book. Your selection should be taken to the library during your regularly scheduled library class.
Sr. Shearer will present each child with a Birthday Book Club membership certificate signed by himself. Your gift to the library will have a bookplate attached so that anyone reading it will know of your generosity and school spirit!
Collecting Used Cell Phones and Ink Cartridges of All Sizes - We are still collecting all year long! Our library gets points and cash for these items, so don't forget to collect them at your home or office and drop them off in the library. No toner cartridges please. Funds from these items are used to supplement the PTA and School library budget with purchases of new books, replacements for lost books, and upgrades of older books. Thanks for your participation!

I am taking this opportunity to say, "Adios," to my home away from home. This is the beginning of my 28th year here at Puesta del Sol, out of a 42 year career all in Spanish language programs.
I have loved it all!
Gracias to the Puesta del Sol community at large and to my most amazing colleagues past and present, who over the years have been of incredible support to me personally and to the program.
Gracias, gracias, gracias.
Adios Y ¡Viva el español!
