Head lice are not dangerous. They do not transmit disease, but they do spread easily. During our 3-day weekend, it is important to check each and every family member for lice!
A few things to consider include:
- All household members and other close contacts should be checked, and those with evidence of an active infestation should also be treated at the same time.
- There are a number of available treatments, including new prescription treatment options that are safe and do not require combing out nits from your child's hair.
- Resistance to some over-the-counter head lice treatments has been reported. The prevalence of resistance is not known.
- There is no scientific evidence that home remedies are effective treatments.
- Family bed linens and recently used clothes, hats and towels should be washed in very hot water.
- Personal articles such as combs, brushes and hair clips should also be washed in hot water if they are in contact with a person with head lice.
As you and your family deal with this uncomfortable but common issue, keep in mind that head lice infestations are not related to cleanliness. In fact, head lice often infest people with good hygiene and grooming habits. Infestations can occur at home, school or in the community. Head lice are mostly spread by direct head-to-head contact-for example, during play at home or school, slumber parties, sports activities, or camp. Less often, head lice are spread via objects that have been in recent contact with a person with head lice, such as hats, scarves, hair combs, brushes, etc.
I am here to help you in any way I can. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can answer any questions or provide you with additional information.
Sincerely,
Cori Ponte, RN BSN

| Global Reading Challenge for 4th and 5th Graders
The Global Reading Challenge begins in November. Sra. Brody will be looking for students with different reading abilities to form teams that will compete against each other and eventually other Bellevue Elementary school teams.
Students who participate in the program will read 2 or more of the 10 fiction and/or nonfiction books that have been selected by children's librarians from the King County Library. The specific books represent a wide variety of interests and reading levels. Students will be reading for pleasure, for information, for fun and to gain exposure to a variety of authors and subjects in order to challenge other teams in a quiz bowl format.
It is already evident that many students in our school want to participate in this exciting event. We would like to have willing parents to help work with teams every Wednesday during lunch and recess from November through February.
Here is the Reading Challenge Schedule:
* October - Challenge books delivered by King County Library representative
* November - Teams will be formed and students choose the books they will read
* November to February - Read books and practice with the team every Wednesday at lunch recess
* February - First in-school Reading Challenge between our teams
* March - Our winning team challenges other Bellevue Elementary Schools If your child is interested, please fill out the permission slip here and return to the library by November 13. For questions or to volunteer, please email brodys@bsd405.org. |
