SCALE-UP APPLICATIONS DUE MAY 2!
 

The Governor's STEM Advisory Council has approved 10 high-quality STEM education programs for 2014-15 that will be offered to schools, after-school programs and other settings for grades pre-K through 12. Applications are being accepted now through May 2.  To find out more about each program, click the links below.

Southeast IA STEM Festival

 

On April 26, the Southeast IA STEM Festival was held at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington.  The event was a huge success with 40 exhibitors, over 50 volunteers and tons of excited students and parents.  Students were able to see all of the exciting opportunities in STEM through hands-on exhibits such as 3D printing, DNA extraction, robotics, the physics of Angry Birds, manufacturing simulations and much, much more!  Click here to see pictures of the event in action.

 

Cedar Rapids iExplore STEM Festival

 

We will are also sponsoring the Cedar Rapids iExplore STEM Festival May 3 from 1:00-5:00 pm at McKinley Middle School.  Ron Corbett, Cedar Rapids Mayor, has declared May 3 as iExplore STEM Day in recognition of the importance of STEM education in our community.  Come check out flying fireballs, food batteries, squishy circuits, and much more!  For more information about the event, contact  LaSheila Yates or visit our website .

 

Modern Marvels 2.0

 

The Iowa City Area Development (ICAD) Group is partnering with the SE STEM Hub to provide their partners, clients, investors and community a unique opportunity to experience STEM and see its impact in education and employment.  Working with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Iowa College of Engineering, the University of Iowa Alumni Association and local high schools, the event will showcase UI senior design projects, faculty projects, local robotics teams and other STEM booths with the goal of connecting students to businesses to strengthen our future workforce.

Muscatine STEM Festival

 

We are actively seeking exhibitors and volunteers for the Muscatine STEM Festival May 10 from 1:00-5:00 at the Lucille A. Carver Mississippi Riverside Environmental Research Station.  To register an exhibit or to sign-up to volunteer, check out our Muscatine STEM Festival page.  Last year's activities included the ever-popular Ooblick Pit, Pedal for Power, Junior Mini Medical School, x-rays and surgery, and vision and depth perception optical lenses tests.  Prize drawings will be every hour, on the hour and you must be present to win!

Kirkwood Interactive Camps for Kids (KICK)
The KICK programs are designed to provide your child an enriching summer experience filled with exciting adventures and positive learning experiences.  Designed for youth ages 9-15, KICK offers a wide variety of camps focusing on career exploration, adventure and fun.  Whether it's a camp in video gaming, art, rocketry, graphic design, photography, or cooking, your child will find just the right summer camp experience ideally suited for them.  For more information, visit http://www.kirkwood.edu/kick

AP Professional Development for Teachers
The Belin-Blank Center at the University of Iowa will be hosting an AP Summer Institute for teachers of AP courses July 7-10.  The five AP STEM courses are Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Physics.  To register, click here.

PLTW Summer Core Training Institutes

QCESC Engineering Kids Camp
Registration is now open for the 6th annual QCESC Engineering Kids Camp July 21 - July 25, 2014 at the Putnam Museum in Davenport.  The camp is a collaboration between the QCESC, the Putnam Museum and the Iowa State University College of Engineering who design and lead the camp.  Each one day camp will include three, fun educational hand-on activities including LEGO robotics with challenges for various student experience levels and will include big screen movie along with a camp t-shirt and lunch.  Click here to register

IMPACT Program for Teachers
UNI has received funding to work with PreK-12 teachers to advance math and science instruction through a professional development program called IMPACT. This program follows the Iowa Professional Development Model with a two week Summer Institute at UNI and ongoing education and support throughout the school year. Science and math teachers will be brought together with scientists through the GLOBE and STORM programs.  Teachers will also integrate educational technology in their classroom units. Participants are paid for their time and implementation. The workshop is free and housing/meals are provided. There is a credit option, including an earth science endorsement credits option from UNI and reaccreditation credits from the AEA.  Middle School Teachers: Regular IMPACT Workshop July 20-Aug 1; Elementary Teachers: Experiences in Inquiry IMPACT Workshop June 24-25.  Click here for more info
 
Teacher Externships Application Live
 
The Real World Externship for Teachers of Mathematics, Science and Technology is a program aimed at providing teachers with the opportunity to gain real-world experience in local industries and businesses.  This year, the Governor's STEM Advisory Council intends to expand in order to meet demand for this professional development program for teachers. 
 
Teacher externs earn up to $4800 during this full-time, six-week experience at the host business.  Previous business/industry experience is not required to participate and teachers will receive on-the-job training in preparation of the tasks and assignments of the externship.

Reminder: 2013-2014 Scale-Up Monitoring

As stated in each LEA's Service Agreement, educators are responsible for completing the three-part evaluation of the STEM scale-up as required by the Governor's STEM Advisory Council.  These scale-up monitoring activities include a teacher/leader survey, student participation list, and student surveys.  A link to these activities can be found here
2014 ABI Taking Care of Business Conference

 

On Wednesday, June 11th, Mike Rowe will give an inspirational speech entitled Profoundly Disconnected: The skills gap is here and if we don't close it, it'll swallow us all at the 2014 Annual ABI Conference in Cedar Rapids.  ABI would like to extend a limited number of free tickets and a greatly reduced rate of $35 for interested K-12 students in the area.

To register, click here and use ROWEK12 at the payment screen and that will reduce the $35 ticket price to $0. There are limited number of free tickets so please register ASAP! After that the rate is $35.

Defined STEM 

A web-based content delivery resource that focuses on authentic assessment and college and career readiness through project based learning.  The goal is to challenge students to solve problems through the use of career related performance tasks built around the Understanding by Design framework and corresponding non-fiction literacy tasks based on the Literacy Design Collaborative.
