The Newsletter of OPEIU Local 39
Greetings!
Ah, it's that time of year again. The leaves have turned and begun to fall. The warm days of summer are behind us but  winter holidays are still ahead. We've time to begin focusing on those things that didn't catch our attention during the carefree days of summer.

Two things that are happening now that should claim our attention. One is that the Union Quarterly Membership meeting is coming up again. We didn't meet quorum last time and there are important matters that need to be decided.

The other issue is that most of us are deciding about how to take the best advantage of the benefit programs that the Union has won for us through bargaining. More on that below, with a special notice to those who work at CUNA Mutual Group.

  • Executive Board Nominations

The local will be accepting nominations for four Executive Board positions: President, Recording Secretary, Trustees 2 & 3. (Nominations from members can only be made in person at the Membership meeting.) Please see the duties of each position listed below.

President
  • The President shall preside at all general membership meetings and Executive Board meetings;
  • shall preserve order during its deliberations;
  • sign all checks drawn on the treasury;
  • appoint all committees not otherwise ordered;
  • transact such other business as may of right pertain to his office and which may be necessary to the proper functioning of this Union;
  • shall have such other powers and duties as are provided for in this Constitution and Bylaws.

Recording Secretary
  • Keep the minutes of all meetings and proceedings of the Union and the Executive Board and shall send out all meeting notices.
  • Keep copies of all agreements at the Union Office (if one exists) so that they will be available for inspection by any member or employee whose rights are directly affected.
  • File a copy of all collective bargaining agreements entered into by this Union with the President of the International Union.

Trustee 2 & 3

    .
  • Other duties as assigned by the President or Vice-President as needed.

Note:  No person shall be elected or appointed to an office in or as an Executive Board member of this Union unless such person has been a member of this Union in continuous good standing for at least the preceding twelve months.

All persons nominated must indicate their acceptance or declination either verbally if present at the membership meeting or in writing within five days after the nomination.

Only Members in Good Standing can be nominated to an Executive Board position.

All positions on the Executive Board are unpaid.

Notice: We did not have a quorum at the summer meeting. For the Union to work on behalf of all of us, it's important that enough people participate that decisions can be made in a legal manner and method. Please, do what you can to attend the meeting and nominate your choices for the above positions.
Special Notice to CUNA Mutual Group Members
money_parachute.jpg During the last negotiations, a benefit regarding long term disability was agreed on. Right now, during this enrollment period, CUNA Mutual Group members can get a Long Term Disability benefit at a greatly reduced cost. The reason is that, during open enrollment, we can get the 70% LTD on a pre-tax basis. If you do not sign up (I'm young! I'm healthy! I don't even want to think about needing disability insurance!) and find you need the benefit later, it will be subject to underwriting and could be denied at the 70% level.

This is a good deal and, like most insurance, it makes sense to get it before it's needed.

If you're curious, here's the relevant contract language:
"Employee may purchase a 70% program on a pre-tax basis, guaranteed issue at the time of first eligibility.  Purchase of a 70% program after the time of first eligibility will be subject to an underwriting contingency.  Existing Employees will have a one-time opportunity to purchase a 70% program on a guaranteed issue basis during 2014 annual benefits enrollment.  Effective January 1, 2014, purchase of a 70% program by an existing Employee will be subject to an underwriting contingency

For Everyone Else:
Be sure to take advantage of the hard-won benefits during this time of open enrollments. Health care costs have been one of the biggest fights for every unit at every contract negotiation. We pay less, on average, than any worker at a non-union business.
Who are our Stewards?
This is just a quick reminder that every unit has someone that members can call on: to answer questions, in case of discipline issues, or just to understand more about how the Union benefits all of us. Reach out to a steward from your unit. If you don't see your unit listed, or if you just want to talk to the business agent, contact Debi.

Unlike what's often said about unions, our Union is one of the most democratic organizations you'll ever be a part of. The Membership Meetings are held both to inform the membership of what's going on but also to get membership approval on proposals. NOTHING HAPPENS if you don't participate!

We didn't make quorum last time, so that means that the business of our Union is impeded. Did you like the shutdown of the US Government? Well, it's kind of like that for the Union if we don't meet quorum. Without you, we can't move forward. So please, make time and stop by. It's an hour well spent.

If there are questions you have about the Union you'd like to see in this newsletter, please drop us a line or join our Facebook page. If you want to stop receiving this newsletter but want other Union communications, please contact me directly. Using the Unsubscribe at the bottom of this page will stop ALL communications with you.
