ANNOUNCEMENTS
Luther College's Philharmonia will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 17, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus. The program features the following works: the first movement of Symphony No. 1 by Beethoven, "Five Courtly Dances from Gloriana" by Benjamin Britten and "A Shakespeare Suite: Film from Richard III" by William Walton.

Nobel Peace Prize nominee Steinar Bryn and Associate Officer Anatolii Kyryliuk from the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialog have spent years educating students and politicians on their methodology of peace dialogue. From 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday, November 13, they will screen the film "Reunion," and host a discussion of peacemaking in the modern world in Olin Building, Room 102. Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement, the Dean's Office, and the U.S. Embassy in Oslo.

Who do you trust and why do you trust them? The VPA department explores these questions through dance in their production of "Who Do You Trust?" in the Center for the Arts, Jewel Theatre. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 17;
9:30 p.m.
Friday, November 18; and 1:30 and 7:30 p.m.Saturday, November 19.
The performance features nine unique and deeply evocative duets within a gallery exhibition format. 

Students are encouraged to attend a discussion with Steinar Bryn and Anatolii Kyryliuk from the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialog in Lillehammer. They will learn about the Peace Scholars summer program in Norway, focused on the study of important issues and theories regarding conflict, war and peace. The Luther College Jazz Band is in concert at 
7:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 15
, in Luther's Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. Also performing in the concert is the Luther College Supersax Ensemble featuring Luther students and professors.

Luther Land Stewardship and Green Iowa will be hosting a Buckthorn Blitz on Sunday, November 13from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Anyone who is interested in volunteering should meet at the Hickory Ridge Woods Trail near the Luther College Presidents House. Work gloves and tools will provided. Wear clothes that can get dirty and don't forget your water bottle! Contact Lauren Mordini for more information or questions.  
 
November 14-18 stop in the Book Shop for our annual Children's Book Sale. Books will range from $1-$6. Purchase books as early holiday gifts or stock up your favorite teachers library.

The International Students and Allies Association is proud to present International Education Week starting on 15 November to 19 November. This year's celebration of international learning will feature a documentary viewing and panel discussion of "Crossing Borders" on Tuesday 15 Novemberin Valders 206 at 7 p.m. and African-Caribbean night on Friday 18 November at 8 p.m. in Marty's. Come and join us in this global exchange of knowledge and celebration of diverse culture!

An open door singing session that is for everyone! Whether you've sung all your life or think you "can't carry a tune in a bucket," don't worry! In no time at all, you'll find yourself part of a glorious sound when you join Liz Rog for community singing! Held in the stone circle outside the CFA on Thursdays from 5:15-6:15 p.m. (bad weather location: Wigley-Fleming Gallery, CFA). Sponsored by Wellness and Campus Ministries

The Center for Sustainable Communities will be offering free winter bike storage for all students and staff on Thursday, November 17and Friday, November 18. Bicycles will be placed in secure, dry storage in the Ashmore-Jewell Barn (the red barn next to Baker Village). All bikes must be registered for storage and brought to the barn from 3-6 p.m. Register your bike and read the winter storage policy on the Bike transportation webpage.

We invite candidates for the Goldwater, Truman, and Udall nationally competitive scholarships. Please review these credentials and websites, and then make an advising appointment with Ann Landstrom, fellowship advisor in the dean of the faculty office, through email. Students should begin their applications now to present competitive applications for the campus and foundation review processes.
 
Goldwater Scholarship - Sophomores and juniors in the fields of mathematics, science, computer disciplines, and engineering are eligible to apply for one and two year scholarships to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board, with a maximum of $7,500 per year, for undergraduate education. Academic qualifications include a minimum GPA of a 3.0, with competitive standards at 3.5 or better. Website. The campus deadline is Friday, January 6, 2017 at 2 p.m.
 
Truman Scholarship - Juniors with a plan to pursue careers in government or elsewhere in public service will be interested in this scholarship to support up to $30,000 toward a public service-related graduate degree. Applicants must have strong academic credentials with a significant leadership and public service record. Website. The campus deadline is Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 2 p.m.
 
Udall Scholarship - Sophomores and juniors with distinct leadership, public service, and commitment in the areas of the environment, tribal policy, and native health care are eligible for undergraduate scholarships up to $7,000 each. Qualifications include community service and leadership records, along with a college GPA of at least a "B" or the equivalent. Website. The campus deadline is Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at
2 p.m.
 
RERUNS
After extensive travels during spring and summer 2016, Luther College Professors Robert and Victoria Christman gained important personal insights into the views of everyday Europeans during a turbulent political time. The professors will give a lecture reflecting on their experience titled, "Europa Afflicta: Personal Observations on the Mood in Europe" at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 12 , in the Shirley Baker Commons.

If you will be on campus during Thanksgiving Break and would like to have a nice Thanksgiving meal with friends, Pulpit Rock is hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, November 24, from 12-4 p.m. They have four different time slots, each an hour. If you would like to sign up, you can sign up in the LDC or online.

The Norse Knitters and PRIDE will be hosting Brian Juchems on campus this Sunday, November 13. Join us in Valders 206 from 2-4 p.m.to learn about how to make inclusive environments on campus. For those who are willing to help make Luther a more inclusive college and will help us make everyone feel safe, you have the opportunity to leave with one of the gifts made by the Norse Knitters.  
 

Featuring a repertoire of classical compositions, the Luther College Chamber Orchestra will perform a concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, November 19, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. The Chamber Orchestra will perform Mozart's "Overture to La Clemenza di Tito," and Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll." The orchestra will also perform Haydn's "Cello Concerto in D major" which will feature Philip Borter, Luther assistant professor of music, on cello.

The Dorian Keyboard Festival will showcase the top performers of the festival in a recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, November 12, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.

Order your Thanksgiving treats today! Impress Mom and head home for Thanksgiving Break with a fresh pie, cake or rolls from the Luther Bakery for family dinner. Order your baked goods online by Wednesday, November 16and pick up by Wednesday, November 23 at noon from the Dining Services Office. You can even use dining dollars to pay for it!

Several students will spend their Thanksgiving breaks in Cannon Ball, North Dakota, to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline. The primary focus of the trip is standing in solidarity with a historically oppressed and marginalized people, and also to bring supplies. There is a donation box located at the College Ministries Office in the CFL, as well as a GoFundMe page. Contact Courtney Field or Rebecka Green for more information. 

The Diversity Center has a small supply of "Black Lives Matter" posters. Interested persons can stop by the Diversity Center on the first floor of the Union to pick one up.
