After extensive travels during spring and summer 2016, Luther College Professors Robert and Victoria Christman gained important personal insights into the views of everyday Europeans during a turbulent political time. The professors will give a lecture reflecting on their experience titled, "Europa Afflicta: Personal Observations on the Mood in Europe" at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 12 , in the Shirley Baker Commons.
If you will be on campus during Thanksgiving Break and would like to have a nice Thanksgiving meal with friends, Pulpit Rock is hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, November 24, from 12-4 p.m. They have four different time slots, each an hour. If you would like to sign up, you can sign up in the LDC or online. If you have questions, direct them to Michelle Boike.
The Norse Knitters and PRIDE will be hosting Brian Juchems on campus this Sunday, November 13. Join us in Valders 206 from 2-4 p.m.to learn about how to make inclusive environments on campus. For those who are willing to help make Luther a more inclusive college and will help us make everyone feel safe, you have the opportunity to leave with one of the gifts made by the Norse Knitters.
Featuring a repertoire of classical compositions, the Luther College Chamber Orchestra will perform a concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, November 19, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. The Chamber Orchestra will perform Mozart's "Overture to La Clemenza di Tito," and Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll." The orchestra will also perform Haydn's "Cello Concerto in D major" which will feature Philip Borter, Luther assistant professor of music, on cello. The Dorian Keyboard Festival will showcase the top performers of the festival in a recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, November 12, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Order your Thanksgiving treats today! Impress Mom and head home for Thanksgiving Break with a fresh pie, cake or rolls from the Luther Bakery for family dinner. Order your baked goods online by Wednesday, November 16and pick up by Wednesday, November 23 at noon from the Dining Services Office. You can even use dining dollars to pay for it!
Several students will spend their Thanksgiving breaks in Cannon Ball, North Dakota, to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline. The primary focus of the trip is standing in solidarity with a historically oppressed and marginalized people, and also to bring supplies. There is a donation box located at the College Ministries Office in the CFL, as well as a GoFundMe page. Contact Courtney Field or Rebecka Green for more information. The Diversity Center has a small supply of "Black Lives Matter" posters. Interested persons can stop by the Diversity Center on the first floor of the Union to pick one up. |
SAC Cinema with the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement invites the Luther community to a showing of Star Trek Beyond at 7:30 p.m., Friday, November 11, in Valders 206. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.with no charge for admission for students with CAF, $5 without. Along with the showing, there will be a celebration of Star Trek's 50th Anniversary at 6:00 p.m.in Valders 206 to discuss Star Trek's influence on the world lead by Luther faculty. Door prizes will be given.
Luther's brass ensembles will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, in the CFL Main Hall. Luther's brass ensembles include the Brass Choir, Horn Ensemble, Trumpet Ensemble, Trombone Choir, Trombone Ensemble, and Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble. Repertoire is selected from six centuries of musical resources including transcriptions and original compositions.
Featuring a repertoire of classical compositions, the Luther Varsity Band and Luther's Wind and Percussion Ensemble will present a fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 10, in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall.
November 14-19 marks the 2nd anniversary of International Education Week (IEW) at Luther, sponsored by the International Students & Allies Association (ISAA). IEW is an annual celebration of international education and exchange worldwide. The ISAA is looking for 10 student volunteer cooks willing to prepare ethnic dishes for the Global Potluck, taking place Friday, November 18 at 7:00 p.m. in Norby Global House. Thomas Lymenstull will perform a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 11, in the Noble Recital Hall as part of the Dorian Keyboard Festival. Lymenstull serves as an instructor of piano at the Interlochen Arts Academy. He has traveled extenstively through the People's Republic of China, meeting composers and researching music from China. Lymenstull will perform a Chinese work along with pieces by Beethoven, Haydn, Liszt, and Schumann.
We are looking to hire student workers starting as soon as possible. We would like to see a minimum of 6 hours available to work in Multimedia, and would ideally like to hire students that are below Junior standing (4+ semesters remaining on campus). Over the past several months, we have experienced several reported sexual assaults, an attempted break in at the college apartments, the loss of a classmate and other situations that have rocked our sense of safety. Student Senate invites you to meet with Luther and Decorah Police Department officials as they engage us in conversation regarding crime prevention and reporting. There will be opportunities for questions and we ask all interested students, faculty and staff to join in this important conversation regarding our community.
