FROM THE PRESIDENT
During a heated election season, it can be challenging to find common ground with people who hold opposing political views. Last April, scholars and colleagues Cornel West and Robert George came to Luther and spoke about how ideological differences have actually strengthened their relationship. In a conversation titled "The Bond of Truth Seeking: Friendship and Integrity in an Age of Ideology," West and George discussed the skills they have developed in order to have meaningful and open discussions from opposite ends of the political spectrum. Such dialogues are one of the cornerstones of a liberal arts education.

Luther's mission statement calls us to "embrace diversity and challenge one another to learn in community" and to be "enlivened and transformed by encounters with one another, by the exchange of ideas, and by the life of faith and learning." Our strong sense of community is one of the defining characteristics of a Luther education, and our community has room for a variety of political views. Members of the Luther community are encouraged to model good disagreement, to engage in respectful dialogue, and to respect personal property that promotes political or social justice issues or points of view or candidates for public office.

-President Paula J. Carlson
