ANNOUNCEMENTS
Best-selling nonfiction author Erik Larson will deliver the fall 2016 Luther College Distinguished Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Friday, September 23, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The New York Times described Larson as "one of the modern masters of popular narrative non-fiction... adept at rescuing weird and wonderful Gothic tales from the shadows of history. Larson's talk will be followed by a book signing and reception in the CFL lobby.
 
As part of the Center Stage Series, one lucky A Capella group has the chance to perform as the opening act for Vocalosity on October 7. Submission deadline is September 26. Luther College is hosting a Blood Drive in Brunsdale Lounge between Miller and Deiseth Hall. Come one, come ALL, on September 26 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and September 27 from 12:00-6:00 p.m.! Members of the sponsoring organization, Alpha Phi Omega, will be tabling downstairs in the Union by Marty's September 12-16 and September 19-23 from 12-1:00 p.m. and 5-7 p.m.. Your donation is needed. The gratification is instant. Help to SAVE LIVES.
 
The Luther College Piano Quartet will present a recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 25 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The Luther College Piano Quartet features Igor Kalnin, violin; Spencer Martin, viola; Philip Borter, cello; and Miko Kominami, piano. The recital will feature works by Mozart, Brahms and Richard Strauss.
 
The Luther College Chapter of Pi Beta Kappa is hosting a Homecoming Symposium at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, October 1, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall.  Gracia Grindal, Professor Emerita of Rhetoric at Luther Seminary, will present "Ironies and Surprises: The Legacies of Linka Preus and Elisabeth Koren."  Grindal's new book, Unstoppable: The Norwegian Pioneers Educate their Daughters, relies heavily on sources related to Linka Preus and Elisabeth Koren in the Luther College Archives. The Symposium, with a reception to follow, is open to all.
 
Trombonist Eric High, will perform a guest recital on Wednesday, September 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music, Noble Recital Hall. High has performed in Minnesota, Arizona, Tennessee, including with the Arizona Opera, the Salt River Brass Band, Green Bay Symphony Orchestra and the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble. 
 
Candidates for local Iowa Senate, Iowa House of Representatives and the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors will be on campus for a 2016 Candidate Forum Thursday, September 22. The forum will be held at  7 p.m. in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. 
 
Stop in the Book Shop and check out our wall of the Luther Writers Festival novels and purchase a few before the event. There will be author signings by almost all the authors attending the Festival from 10:20 a.m.-1:15 p.m.on Saturday, September 24. Purchase your tickets for the festival and find out more events the Book Shop will be hosting this weekend.

Do you like hanging out with kids? Would you like to spend a couple of hours each month playing games and participating in fun activities? Luther College PALS is looking for more 'Bigs' to join their program!PALS is a community-oriented organization which matches college students with elementary age children in a mentoring relationship. Monthly activities include carnivals, holiday parties, movies, and more! Email pals@luther.edu  for more information.  Applications are due by September 30.

It's hard to believe, but Christmas at Luther tickets are coming soon! All faculty/staff and students are able to secure their Christmas at Luther 2016: Out of Darkness, Light! tickets online starting October 4 at 9 a.m. If you have not yet set up your onlineticketing account, please contact the Ticket Office at x1357. For more information, please check out the CAL Faculty/Staff tickets page or CAL Student tickets page. Tickets are available for all faculty/staff and students until October 11 when they go on sale to all Current Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Luther.

Featuring a variety of works from the opera, art song, and chamber music repertoire, Associate Professor of Music Andrew Whitfield will perform a vocal recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 22
, in the Noble Recital Hall in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The program features works by Mozart, Beethoven, and more.

SOPHOMORES: Spend your junior year in England with Luther professors Martin Klammer and Kathy Reed. Attend an info session to learn more about Luther's Nottingham program on Tuesday, September 20, 7:30 p.m., Hovde Room, Preus Library. Questions? Email global@luther.edu.
