Constitution Day
September 17, 1787, was the day on which the Constitution of the United States was signed by the Constitutional Convention delegates in Independence Hall, Philadelphia. Constitution Day became a holiday in 1997, and is celebrated on September 17 of each year.  Prior to 1997, September 17 was known as Citizenship Day, in celebration of the signing of the Constitution.

Each year, in keeping with Luther's commitment to the liberal arts of citizenship and in accord with federal mandates, we offer various resources for greater understanding of the United States Constitution. To that end, Preus Library maintains a research website with guides to several excellent learning opportunities.

Professor Mike Engelhardt will give a talk, Constitutional Issues in the 2016 Campaign, on
Thursday, September 15, at 7:00 p.m. in Olin 102.Is Ted Cruz, born in Alberta, Canada, a "natural born citizen" of the United States and eligible to be president?  Should children of illegal immigrants born in this country be considered citizens of the United States and eligible for government benefits? These constitutional questions, and others, have all arisen during this year's campaign. Dr. Engelhardt will explore possible answers and invite discussion.

Please stop by theUnion Lobby on Friday, September 16, from 11:00-Noon to celebrate Constitution Day with Carly Hayden Foster's Constitutional Law class.  Students will be explaining constitutional concepts, and controversies related to the U.S. Constitution.
