Within the past few days Luther Safety and Security has received information that three different bicycles may have had their brakes tampered with on campus. Two of these incidents resulted in the rider being injured and their bikes damaged. The bikes were all parked at different locations. As a precaution we recommend riders check their brakes before riding and report any suspected tampering to Safety and Security. We also ask the community to report any suspicious activity near the bike racks immediately by calling (563) 387-2111.
Family Weekend 2016 is scheduled for September 16-18. Check out the online schedule for event details. In the interest of conserving resources, a small supply of hard copies of the Family Weekend brochure will be printed for distribution to parents and family members on Saturday, September 17, 9:00 a.m.-noon, in the Dahl Centennial Union lobby. Ross Szabo speak on Tuesday, September 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL, Main Hall. Ross's story resonates with the millions of college students who are putting on a happy face to hide their true emotions. Ross teaches students about the complexities of mental health issues and empowers them to seek help or help their friends seek help. "Bring out your Dead"? Or just yourself, if you're interested in studying Bubonic Plague, Cholera and other diseases prevalent in 16th Century England during the summer of 2017. Come and hear about ""Paideia 450: Medicine, Madness, and Malady in British History" as we explore ancient as well as modern diseases in London, as well as the Midlands. Critically-acclaimed authors Erik Larson, Bret Anthony Johnston and Jane Hamilton are the featured speakers at the 2016 Luther College Writers Festival, September 23-24, on the Luther campus. Conference registration and a full schedule of events is available online. More than 25 contemporary writers of fiction, poetry and nonfiction will read their work, participate in panel discussions and be available for discussion and book signings throughout the conference. Local authors Carol Gilbertson, Charlie Langton, June Melby and Amy Weldon will read from their work and Decorah visual artists David Kamm and John Hall will discuss the relationship between image and text.
Luther's Habitat for Humanity chapter is hosting a pancake fundraiser on September 17, 8 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 604 West Broadway Street, for their 2017 spring break trip to Louisiana. A portion of the proceeds will go back to Winneshiek County Habitat for Humanity. Students and their families are welcome to attend, as well as the Decorah community and surrounding area. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for kids aged 5-12, and free for children under 5.

With a repertoire of Renaissance lute music, Peter Lingen, Luther College teaching associate in music, will perform a lute recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 8, in the Noble Recital Hall in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Lingen performs on a 15-string historic reproduction of a 16th century lute. The program features works by John Dowland and William Byrd.
Attention Students Registered for Private Music Lessons -- If you decide to drop lessons the following schedule will be used to compute the charge for fall 2016: Dropping lessons: by September 4 - No charge; by September 11 - $44 charge; by September 18 - $88 charge; by September 27 - $132 charge; after September 27 - Full charge/$485. This schedule will be followed with no exceptions.
An art exhibit featuring the work of 13 Luther College art alumni will be displayed September 5-October 13 in Preus Library on the Luther campus. This year's alumni exhibition features work by artists celebrating reunions at Homecoming this year. Additional displays include the work of alumni artists, many of whom studied at the California Pond Farm studio of internationally renowned artist Marguerite Wildenhain.
